Status Doesn’t Always Equal Success… Celebrities bust into the Fashion world

Lauren ConradIt seems like in today’s mass pop-cultured world of fashion, the acceptance of being a “designer” seems to come lightly to those of celebrity status. One must not over look the fact that because a person is simply deemed a “designer” that he or she is good at their trade, and this should be said of celebrities. Currently, amongst young Hollywood there is this need to design clothing. Of course that goes without saying that every time one of these “pop princesses” are interviewed about their fashion career choice they gush “ I have always loved clothes and fashion”. It’s interesting how the majority of these girls have always loved fashion, but lacked the sense of self-expression when they have people like celebrity stylist Rachel Zoë dressing them.

Right now the fashion world is littered with these stars who claim to know fashion and to know it enough to appeal to the tastes of the mass market. Lauren Conrad, most commonly known as L.C., the reality star from MTV’s The Hills, has launched her fashion line “Lauren Conrad”. This collection is a bevy of plain, cotton, Southern Californian inspired pieces at the “cheap” price range of 100 dollars U.S. and upwards, and can be found on her website . But it’s worth it because not only can you own a piece that is rightfully named after one of her best friends (quintessentially featured on The Hills as well), but you get to “bring out the California girl in you” Conrad states. Sometimes sarcasm doesn’t filter out well through writing. Another celebrity who is attempting to call herself a designer is the ex- Disney star Amanda Bynes. Her line “dear”, unlike our friend L.C.’s, proves to be more pocket-change friendly. And it is. Nothing is priced over 20 dollars U.S., and can be found at the American Steve and Barry’s--the Canadian version of… Giant Tiger perhaps. Now, it’s not like I hate all celebrities and their clothing lines. Stars such as the talented Sienna Miller and her sister Savannah have produced an amazing line “Twenty8Tweleve” , and twin-moguls Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have produced an exquisite high-end line “The Row” (available at Holt Renfews across Canada), but the difference here is that they took that notion of fashion and put their own touches into it. Personally, fashion designing is an art form. It’s about re-creating fashion trends that will appeal to the world, or creating new ones by thinking outside the box. It goes beyond the idea that you “enjoy fashion” or making a dress that can be found in any Urban Planet. It’s about the quality, the time, the stiches, the lines, the fabrics, the fit. All of these are ingredients to making a great line. Girls like L.C. need to stop, think about what they are doing, and maybe stick to their dark manicures and Blackberries, before all aspiring designers are doomed to follow in their footsteps.
