‘Telefon’ in Kalamazoo?

In a phone interview, Mackenzie Waite said that Mellen, her fiance, was picked up by an Uber car — a silver Chevrolet Equinox driven by Dalton — about 4:30 p.m. for what was supposed to be a short ride. Halfway through the trip, the driver picked up a phone call on his Bluetooth. Mellen couldn’t hear what was said, but the driver began acting strangely. “He blew through a stop sign, sideswiped a car, starting driving in [and] out of the other lane of traffic,” Waite said. “My fiance was just pleading with him to stop.” -- Mark Guarino, William Wan, Missy Ryan “Uber driver suspected in shootings in Mich. that kill six” “All it will take to trigger them is a simple phone call.” -- Trailer for 'Telefon’ (1977)

When I first heard on the news that the Kalamazoo shooter started acting bizarrely after receiving a phone call, the first thought that popped into my head was “OMG, that’s just like that movie ‘Telefon’– in which brainwashed sleeper agents were programmed to commit mayhem after hearing a code phrase over a phone. Now wait, before you start asking me what size tin-foil hat I wear, hear me out. The CIA’s Project MKUltra with its emphasis on mind control is an indisputable fact. The federal government’s targeting of conservative individuals and NGOs under the Obama Administration is common knowledge, as is their distaste for guns and the 2nd Amendment. I have no desire to crawl down that particular rabbit hole just now, however. Suffice it to say that the fact I would even think along such lines speaks volumes about how I view the federal government these days. Kalamazoo, San Bernardino, Chattanooga, Charleston, the DC Navy Yard, Newtown, Aurora, Tucson, Ft. Hood – just to name a few of the more well-known mass shootings of recent years. I’ve been around this place awhile, and I’m here to tell you that this is not how things used to be folks. For example, during the entire 1950s there was one mass shooting in the US (the Starkweather murders). I’m just saying…. In all probability Jason Dalton was teetering on the brink of a mental breakdown when he received some bad news via a phone call and fell off the edge. In all probability the spate of mass shootings in recent years are the symptoms of a sick and dysfunctional culture – nothing more or less. Probably. But possibly not. Sadly, I no longer dismiss out of hand the idea of nefarious Machiavellian machinations by elements within our own federal government.
