The culture of surrender

In case you’re wondering why Islam is the fastest growing religion in most western countries, it’s because our own religious leaders aren’t particularly interested in the preservation of our religious heritage.

A case in point is the stunning suggestion by Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church of England, that certain elements of shariah law should be recognized under British law in order to establish a principle of “plural jurisdictions”. It’s a small wonder that Dr. Williams is presiding over a church that finds itself in steep decline. Many Christian religious leaders are prepared to sacrifice the survival of their own religions in efforts to appear “inclusive” and “accepting” of those of other faiths. Thus, the call to recognize certain elements of shariah law in the west. In justifying his preposterous position, Dr. Williams used the example of orthodox Jews resorting to a Beth Din to settle certain civil disputes. However, what he did not mention was that Beth Din adjudications have no standing under British common law and conflicts resolved through this process are done so on a strictly voluntary basis with all parties agreeing to abide by the decisions reached in this manner. There is nothing that would stops Muslims from adjudicating their civil disputes in a similar (but equally unofficial) manner without the official involvement of the British judiciary. One wonders why Dr. Williams would be so eager to defend the values of another religion, while Christianity in the west is in decline. Maybe the fact that our own religious leaders are reluctant to defend the traditions of our religion has something to do with that decline. I don’t recall hearing Dr. Williams or other protestant religious leaders defending the public celebration of Christian holidays, like Christmas or Easter, nor have there been reports of him publicly defending the Ten Commandments or even Christianity itself. Pronouncements, such as Dr. Williams’s, serve to illustrate the decay that has taken root in our cultural self-esteem. To urge the adoption into common law of an alien system of religious law, parts of which are barbaric and totally at odds with our own Judeo-Christian roots is an extreme exercise in moral relativity. If all cultures are of relatively similar values to individuals such as the Archbishop of Canterbury, then our own cultural foundations are in deep trouble because religious leaders are supposed to defend and advance the values inherent to their religions. If our religious leaders are off defending the values of another religion, then our own religion takes second a back seat. Could it be that the tenets on which our beliefs are founded aren’t worth defending? And if those tenets aren’t worth defending, then our religion slips into decline, as it is clearly doing. The Anglican Church of England was founded by St. Augustine of Canterbury in 597 A.D. and has flourished for over 1400 years. Dr. Williams, who is the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, has now taken it upon himself to surrender the Anglican religion to the demographic inevitability of a European caliphate. The decline of western Christianity has more to do with the spiritual bankruptcy of religious leaders than it has with the moral decay of its parishioners.
