The entire Senate has been asked to the White House for a Wednesday briefing on North Korea

Last week, Kim Jong Un threatened to annihilate parts of the United States in what Pyongyang termed "a super-mighty pre-emptive strike." Then we got a slew of reports indicating that a U.S. citizen had been detained by the North Korean government. Then, over the weekend, the Norks released a statement indicating they were preparing to sink a U.S. aircraft carrier conducting maneuvers in the region. Now, as tensions rise, everyone is waiting for the United States response. So far, we've heard nothing concrete. One suspects that's about to change.
From Reuters:
Top Trump administration officials will hold a rare briefing on Wednesday at the White House for the entire U.S. Senate on the situation in North Korea, senior Senate aides said on Monday. All 100 senators have been asked to the White House for the briefing by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the aides said. While top administration officials routinely travel to Capitol Hill to address members of Congress on foreign policy and national security matters, it is unusual for the entire 100-member Senate to go to such an event at the White House, and for those four top officials to be involved.
In other words, it smells like something's up. Obviously, no one knows what that is, but we can do a little speculation based on the names involved.

  1. It sounds like the administration has settled on a preferred course of action regarding a certain nuclear-armed dictator and bowl cut enthusiast. The meeting will give them a chance to lay out the intelligence, and prepare everyone for the upcoming conflict. Given that the top brass is going to be there, this probably makes the most sense,
  2. They're going to start wrangling - and pressuring - the assembled Senators to support a use of force authorization. This makes sense, too - especially as we're hearing a follow-up meeting, this time with the House of Representatives, is also in the works. Starting with the Senate is solid strategy, since Trump will have a much easier time with the GOP's substantially larger House majority.
  3. Such an unorthodox, high-level, meeting will itself serve as a sort of warning shot for the Norks.
  4. As Dan Calabrese says, "Team Trump is going to give the entire Senate a bunch of fake info and see what Bernie runs and tells Bowl Cut Jr."
We can probably rule that last option out. The meeting is scheduled for 3PM Wednesday afternoon, so it's fair to assume we'll hear something (no matter how vague) as soon as it ends. We will, as always, keep you posted.
