CA Dem Ted Lieu --- Civics 101

CA Dem Ted Lieu: Trump will be removed from office ...thanks to the framers ...who gave us the 25th Amendment ...in 1967. ...Or something.

Recently, Vanity Fair ran a piece which alleges that President Trump hates his job so much that it's basically driving him insane. We've heard some version of this tale almost since the first day of his presidency. Usually, it involves a variation of the phrase "he's going to quit any minute." The latest iteration ditches that, in favor of the idea that he might turn the entire planet into a radioactive wasteland:
It brought into the open what several people close to the president have recently told me in private: that Trump is “unstable,” “losing a step,” and “unraveling.”
The conversation among some of the president’s longtime confidantes, along with the character of some of the leaks emerging from the White House has shifted. There’s a new level of concern. NBC News published a report that Trump shocked his national security team when he called for a nearly tenfold increase in the country’s nuclear arsenal during a briefing this summer.
Never fear, however. The Constitution contains a remedy for just such a situation! It's called the 25th Amendment, and it contains provisions whereby the "Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments" can remove a sitting President should he be unable to perform the duties of his office. That means it could just take 14 people to rid the world of President Trump, and Democrats are getting all excited about it. Lefties - notably crackpots like Keith Olbermann - have been sending messages to Vice President Pence, urging him to lead what would amount to a constitutional coup. Every so often, you'll even see #25thAmendment trending on Twitter. Enter California Democrat Representative Ted Lieu, who seems to think that "The Framers" were behind this plan...

Unfortunately, the 25th Amendment has absolutely nothing to do with "The Framers." It was proposed in 1965 and ratified in 1967 - almost two centuries after the Constitution, and 120 years after the last "framer" died. Also, Lieu's plan probably wouldn't work in the first place. Even if he got Pence to join his crusade, half the cabinet would have to agree and the ousted Trump would have a chance to write to Congress re-asserting his fitness to lead. Then it would take a 2/3 vote in both chambers - within 21 days - to remove him. So, we're not even talking about a long shot, here. We're talking about a leftist fever-dream. I bring up the inaccuracy and impossibility not to pile on Ted Lieu (although that IS fun) but to point out that any time a Democrat starts offering lectures on the Constitution, you should probably tune them out. The modern American left views our founding document as an occasionally useful obstacle. They lean on it when it suits their purpose, but they know little about it - aside from the fact that it prevents them from simply "doing whatever they want."
