Voluntary private pensions better than CPP Tax hikes

TORONTO: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) expressed its support today for the federal government’s move towards the creation of Private Registered Pension Plans (PRPPs).

CTF Federal Director, Kevin Gaudet, said “creating a voluntary private program is a much better approach than the CPP tax hikes others have been proposing.” The CTF responded to a plan being discussed in Alberta today at the Finance Ministers’ meeting. Federal Finance Minister Flaherty has proposed a new voluntary program that will provide another savings vehicle for Canadians in addition to their Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Some provinces, pundits and unions have been advocating a mandatory increase to CPP or the creation of a mandatory plan supplemental to CPP. Minister Flaherty’s approach will avoid mandatory increased costs to business, providing an important retirement vehicle that many smaller businesses may choose to offer to their employees. Gaudet concluded, “at the end of the day the best way for government to help Canadians save would be for them to leave more money in the pockets of taxpayers.”
