What’s wrong with a team named the ‘Mississauga Chiefs?’

The Ontario Human Rights commission is about to hear a complaint from an aboriginal man, Brad Gallant. Gallant ran to the thought police to complain about the racially insensitive names of some of the sports teams in Mississauga, Ontario, just west of Toronto. Gallant is whining about the institutional racism of the city for funding and allowing those team names to remain. As the Toronto Sun reports, two of the teams names he objects to are the Lorne Park Ojibwa and the Mississauga Chiefs.
Complaining about names of sports teams is becoming a pastime of people with way too much time on their hands. Another aboriginal activist, Douglas Cardinal, sought an injunction during baseball’s ALCS when the Cleveland Indians were set to play in Toronto. The injunction asked a judge to ban the name “Indians” as well as a ban from the Cleveland club using Chief Wahoo as the logo on their uniforms. The Indians have been playing baseball in Toronto with the same name and logo since the Blue Jays entered the American League in 1977. But Cardinal felt he had to seek an emergency court order only when the Indians were playing the Jays in the ALCS. Skeptics could be forgiven for thinking Cardinal was only seeking attention. Even conceding some logos such as Chief Wahoo might be considered racial stereotyping, it is hard to understand what is so objectionable about calling a team the Mississauga Ojibwa or the Mississauga Chiefs. Human rights tribunals are not afraid to rely on half measures in their quest to limit speech and enforce political correctness so let’s hope they go all the way and prevent the term “chief” from ever being used anywhere lest some aboriginals like Gallant be offended. Let’s start with Jennifer Evans. Who is Jennifer Evans you ask? Well, she is head of the police in the Regional Municipality of Peel whose jurisdiction includes Mississauga. Ms. Evans is also referred to as the police “chief.” What a racist title! Hopefully someone who wants to rid Ontario of all racism will go after her too.

And let’s not limit this to just Peel region and its police. If the name Mississauga Chiefs is racist only because of the word “chief” then so is every non-aboriginal use of that word.” Let’s ban the use of terms such as police chief, fire chief, chief of staff and chief executive officer. The list goes on and on. Human rights tribunals are such that it will not cost Gallant a penny to pursue his ridiculous claim. The taxpayer will be in the hook for the total cost of the tribunal listening to arguments and deciding whether naming a team “chiefs” is racist. And millions of people cannot understand why Donald Trump was elected president of the United States.
