Why I believe Trump can be a very good, and possibly great, president

I realize a lot of conservatives are wringing their hands about voting for Donald Trump. Some are doing so reluctantly to stop Hillary. Some remain in the #NeverTrump camp and are either voting third-party, writing someone in as a protest or not voting at all. I have been consistent since the primary season, when I named Trump as one of my Pick Six, in saying that I believed Trump was among the best Republican candidates of this season. This was long before electing Trump was the only way to stop Hillary, and I didn’t have to include him at the time. I did so because I know a lot about his thinking and about how he operates – things many people sadly don’t know because of the inevitable nonsense that has characterized media coverage of this campaign. There are a lot of reasons to believe he would govern and lead in a manner that would not only make America proud but start us down the path of solving many of our toughest problems.
Before I get into that, let me address the infamous Access Hollywood tape: I did not like the things I heard him say on that tape. I can’t imagine anyone did. There is no way I can spin that in his favor. But I will tell you this: As someone who’s spent years in business, spent time in country clubs, on golf courses, in locker rooms and other male-dominated places, I’ve heard many comments of a similar nature coming from men who are good business leaders and good family men. In most cases I am sure the things they said – however vulgar and inappropriate – did not reflect the way they really live or think. Had a recorder been secretly recording them, the recording would have made them look like something they were not. It would have been their own fault, but it still would have given people a very misleading impression. That is what I think happened in the case of Donald Trump and the Access Hollywood tape, and that’s all I’m going to say about that. Now, why would Donald Trump make a good president? For one thing, he has a clear understanding of our nation’s problems. He knows we cannot sustain $20 trillion in debt and hundreds of trillions in unfunded entitlement obligations. He knows ObamaCare is killing health care in this country. He knows our energy policies are insane. He knows our tax code is a muddled mess. He knows we’ve neglected to lead globally and that we’re paying a price for that in terms of our relations with our allies, and in terms of our own national security. Hillary Clinton doesn’t deal with reality on a single one of these issues. Trump deal with reality on all of them.

And Trump has proposed excellent solutions to the problems. His proposals to overhaul the tax code and replace ObamaCare have been lost in the shuffle of typical political noise, but you should read them. He has shown in recent weeks that he understands economic growth is the key to our long-term prosperity. If you care about the future of the Supreme Court – and you should – Trump has left no mystery about what he would do if given the chance to nominate a successor to Antonin Scalia. Trump has also demonstrated, by choosing Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate, that he values having someone around with experience both as a congressman and a governor, whose track record is one of successfully implementing conservative policies and getting good results from them. Trump may not be a natural at dealing with Capitol Hill, but Pence will help him understand the lay of the land. But the biggest reason to vote for Trump may not be any of this. It’s the very fact that he won’t do things the conventional way. Remember, Republicans controlled both the White House and Congress from 2002 through 2006, for all the good it did us. We can argue about whether it was George W. Bush or congressional leaders who were responsible for the lack of achievement, but the fact of the matter is that just because you have Republicans in power – even conservative Republicans, if we’re to be honest – that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll overcome the inertia of Washington and make real changes. Trump doesn’t care about the traditional limits of what people in Washington are willing to accept. When he sees a problem, he goes into problem-solving mode so he can fix the situation. People who are nervous or afraid don’t have a seat at the table long, and Trump will not care if some Republican congressman risk losing his seat by helping to solve the problem. That’s the kind of thinking we need.

Hillary Clinton would make a horrendous president

I really don’t think I have to cover all the reasons Hillary Clinton would make a horrendous president. We’ve been over that many times in this space. But I think two thoughts sum it up: 1. We need major change from the status quo policies to solve our problems, and Hillary will not embrace any of that change; 2. If we elect someone who everyone knows is a lawbreaker, and put her in charge of the law enforcement apparatus of the federal government, the rule of law is dead in this country. Donald Trump will surely not do everything right, and he cannot solve every problem by himself. He can be too quick with his comments and sometimes that will upset people. The media will hate him, but as Republicans we’re used to that whenever we hold the White House. This nation cannot afford another four years of kicking the can down the road or pretending our problems aren’t serious. We need real, serious leadership. Donald Trump is an unusual candidate and he would be an unusual president. I’ve heard people argue that for all her corruption and dishonesty, Hillary knows her way around the halls of power and she would be a steady hand at the wheel. I’ve never believed that was true. Everything we know about Hillary is that her principles are for sale and her only real priority is herself. And just about every scheme she’s every concocted has come back to bite her. That’s not the kind of person from whom I expect steady leadership. Think what you want about Trump’s personality, but he’s built and maintained a large and successful business enterprise – not without some hiccups, to be sure – and you don’t do that if you’re not a steady and capable leader. Trump has been that kind of leader, and he will be that kind of leader for our nation too. You can vote for him on Tuesday and feel good about it. And when he wins, as I fully expect, you can feel some real optimism about our future for the first time in a long time. Now let’s go make it happen.
