QUEEN’S PARK – The McGuinty Liberals should heed a call from Ontario’s Environment Commissioner to prohibit wind turbines from bird and bat migratory routes, PC Energy Critic and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli said today.

In part two of his annual report released today, Gord Miller notes birds and bats can be injured or killed in flight if they collide with wind turbine blades or towers.

Fedeli says this is just the latest reason to follow the Ontario PC plan to cancel the Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) program, which pays expensive subsidies to wind power producers, driving up hydro rates and killing jobs and investment in the province.

“Wind turbines do absolutely nothing to help the 600,000 Ontarians who woke up this morning without a job,” said Fedeli.

“First, the Auditor General tells us how bad wind turbines are for the economy; then Health Canada sees fit to study the ill health effects from turbines; now the Environment Commissioner is warning of their impact on wildlife,” Fedeli added.

“We don’t need to see any more evidence of the harm these turbines are doing to Ontario.

“Given the impacts wind turbines have on our hydro bill, the concerns about health impacts and now impacts on wildlife, it’s clear wind power just has too many costs,” said PC Deputy Energy Critic Lisa Thompson (Huron-Bruce), who has repeatedly called for a moratorium on all industrial wind turbine developments in Ontario.

“It’s time to end this government’s ridiculous wind experiment.”
