The American election

Something bigger than 9/11 occurred this past election year—and no one seems to have noticed, despite some obvious clues:

[1] The powerhouse Clintons were ousted from power in their party,
[2] a faux candidate was foisted of on the Republicans, and
[3] someone about whom no one knows anything is President.

For Whom the Poppies Blow

They cannot hear the muffled
nor the bugle’s mournful sound
for they gave their all for freedom
on a distant battleground.
They cannot feel the mourners’
nor see their loved ones’ tears
whose remembrance day is
every day
down all the lonely years.

Ruffling the eagle’s feathers

While we are very careful not to disparage any minority group because of their race, religion or sex, we have no such qualms about disparaging our American neighbors, even as we wallow in everything American from the Simpsons to Sarah Palin. In fact sneering at the U.S. is almost as popular as hockey in the great white north. We especially enjoy condemning the U.S. for its racism. But even though Canada doesn’t have a history of slavery,  we are not a as simon pure as we would like to believe. In fact it’s not that long ago that Jews and blacks were victims of widespread discrimination throughout Canada.

I disagree with Licia Corbella

Normally I agree with Licia Corbella, on many things but not this time.. I am a BIG Sarah Palin fan, and furthermore, there can be NO JUSTIFICATION WHATSOEVER for a vote for Barack Obama who has shown a greater disregard for human life in its embryonic state than any candidate that has gone before.

The Democrats will cut the military

Aside from the concept of posse comitatus, Obama is no doubt aware of the questionaires the military has done periodically, which always show that very few in any branch would fire on their fellow citizens.  When they give it to US Army Special Forces, the result has always been the same—that the SF troops would assume the people were right and would go off to join the civilian leadership.

Stéphane down, Steve to go

With all due respect I think your sentiments about Stephen Harper “moving on” are more wishful thinking than reality.  Mr. Harper has barely had a chance to prove himself.

His minority government lasted longer than most people thought and fact was the longest reigning minority government in our history.  Harper has consistently proved his critics wrong.

Taxpayers’ money

I believe it was a mistake for the U.S. to give billions of dollars to Europe following WWII (The Marshall Plan) as an outright gift instead of a loan to be repaid with interest when those war-ravaged countries became prosperous.  Now that the U.S. economy needs a huge transfusion of taxpayers money, it’s to be hoped that Washington doesn’t make the same mistake again.

An Adult Maturity Test?

The current debate on whether 16–year–olds should be considered mature enough to vote, while at the same time urging the government to lift their drivers licenses if they refuse to stay in school until they are eighteen, is causing us, once more, to ponder the definition of adulthood and the appropriateness of treating juveniles as adults, especially in the law courts.

Dirty Talking

The two teenage girls in the seat behind me on the bus were discussing the shortcomings of their supervisor at the burger joint. “The bottom line is,” said one of them, without even trying to lower her voice, ” he’s a &%##@ son-of-a-#.”
