Randy Hillier will bring democracy back to local communities

(April 14, 2009, Perth, Ontario) – Randy Hillier, MPP for Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington and PC Leadership candidate, announced today that he would bring forward legislation to allow for de-amalgamation.

“For far too long governments have ignored the wishes of the people,” Hillier said. “Now is the time to allow the people to speak and make the changes that will improve their lives and their communities.” “Residents should have a say in not only who governs them but how as well. Different communities have different needs, especially the rural areas that have been amalgamated into cities.” “I have heard from Ontarians who have seen their taxpayer dollars wasted, have lost local decision making, and even the identity of their communities. De-amalgamation is the answer and these communities deserve that choice.” “Dalton McGuinty may be most infamous for breaking his no new taxes pledge, but stopping communities from deciding their own fate was his next worst betrayal.” The Hillier Campaign is anchored by three central principles: Freedom, Justice and Democracy. Randy Hillier was first elected to the Ontario legislature in October 2007 – winning one of three new seats for the PC Party of Ontario – and was the party’s critic for rural affairs. Previously, he was the President of the Ontario Landowners Associations.
