Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Support for Israel

Beginning of the End?

The meeting this week between Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak volumes as to where the United States will officially stand in relation to its long history of support for Israel. Perhaps we are now at a point and place in history where the United States will no longer reach back to the Bible in its understanding the miraculous fulfillment of prophecy that occurred.

The prophet Isaiah foreshadowed the re-birth of Israel. He described a woman giving birth before going into labor and says, “Shall a nation be born in one day?” This foreshadowed what happened on May 14, 1948 when Israel declared its sovereignty and in the same 24 hours the UN recognized their claim and the US became the first country to officially recognize and establish relations with the newly formed country. Just before that British control of what was then Palestine ended. In one 24 hour period Israel was set free from foreign control, declared independent, recognized by the USA and then other countries, and was literally “born in one day”. But the prophecy spoke of a birth BEFORE labor pains. Within a few hours of its declaration Israel was attacked by its Arab neighbors. Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq launched an attack. Here’s the Bible verse-- one of many on the fate of the Jews which came to pass exactly as the prophet stated: Isaiah 66:7-8
" Before she goes into labor, she gives birth; before the pains come upon her, she delivers a son. Who has ever heard of such a thing? Who has ever seen such things? Can a country be born in a day or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children." The meeting between Obama and Netanyahu will reveal this president’s true motives. Already Obama has chastised Israel as being the problem and roadblock to peace in the Middle East, while at the same being transparent as to his affection toward the Arab world. There is deep distrust among a majority of American Christians who not only side with Israel and its role in end times prophecy, but also believe there is a special admonition from God for those who forsake His chosen people. Obama’s (Jewish) Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, reportedly told an Israeli lobbying group that any efforts by America to stop Iran’s nuclear threat hinged on peace talks with the Palestinians. Netanyahu is first and foremost a hardliner who will not sit idly by and play politics as Iran’s threat to wipe out Israel gets louder. If Obama chooses to use lofty rhetoric he will only get back straight talk from the Israeli PM. If our president takes a hard line, Netanyahu will not likely shrink back and acquiesce. Don’t expect this meeting to produce peace in the Middle East. We’ve had peace accords and treaties many times before only to see violence resume and tensions escalate. What this meeting should reveal however is just where Obama is attempting to move America in its relations with Israel. While I cannot judge whether our president understands Israel’s special place and purpose in God’s plan for the world, I can judge his heart. The Bible tells us, “From the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Thus far I have heard some dark, foreboding, and telling statements and decisions from Obama. His decision on federal funding of abortion and stem cell research as well as his skipping the National Day of Prayer Breakfast and address speak volumes as to his real character- or lack of it. The White House officially stated that the president prays privately everyday. We just aren’t sure if he prays on his knees, or five times a day facing Mecca.
