CHANGE (New Tone II)

"Change". That's the theme of this year's presidential election. A change from the partisan bickering on Capitol Hill. A change in foreign policy. A change in domestic policy. Change. If a "change" does occur, it will be interesting to watch unfold, IF it is allowed to do so.

Let's go back, let's say, seven years. George W. Bush campaigned on "change". He called it "The New Tone". Despite all the negative barbs thrown at him during the campaign, he made a concerted attempt not to go negative. Once elected, he was subjected to daily insults by the left. Remember "selected, not elected"? He was called stupid. After 9/11 and the beginning of the Iraq War, he was called "Hitler", a "warmonger", a "terrorist", a "murderer", and through all this, he never returned fire. So much for "change". We now have presidential candidates running on the admirable platform of "change". But when one of them is elected, will that change be allowed to happen? If a Democrat wins, we'll be reminded of the "mandate" issued by the people. We'll be reminded that Republicans are thereby irrelevant and every liberal initiative must be implemented. There must be no conservative dissent. The people spoke. There must be "change". If a Republican wins, it'll either be because the American people were too stupid to understand what was at stake, or the election was stolen (again). We'll be reminded (should the Democrats maintain control of the House and Senate) that they should heed the words of liberals. The Democrats will have been kept in power to maintain those ol' checks and balances. A Republican presidency will not mean that he should get anything he wants. We'll hear no talk of mandate. We'll be instructed that there must be compromise. Anything less will be a total dissing of the electorate. Should a Democrat win, there will be parties from Manhattan to Hollywood. Should a Republican win, we'll be told not to gloat. Will there be civility on Capitol Hill? That's an admirable dream, but after eight years of the politics of personal destruction, and the following eight years of "new tone" unrewarded, one can only hope the reaching-across-the aisle overtures are at least acknowledged. We know from experience that the left demands one thing and does another. They will EXPECT a conciliatory tone from Republicans should they win. You know, "change". But should a Republican win The White House, they will most certainly go on the attack from Day One. I'm not sure if the right will be much different. We may go easy on the new Democrat president during the honeymoon period, but should that president assume they can get whatever they want and is met with the slightest opposition, he or she may go negative and conservatives will respond in kind. Once that happens, all bets are off. "Change". Change would be nice. Unfortunately, we're dealing with human beings. Human beings who have memories. Human beings who've had "change" spat back in their faces. To be quite honest, I'm still bitter about the whole thing. But the left would have us forget all about what they did to George W. Bush should their man or woman be elected. You know; that was then, this is now. Let's hope we do get "change" after the election. Hope.
