State Sovereignty, Obamanomics and Obamacare

Texas Two-Step

I have always been enamored by Texas. Big, brash, boastful, and beautiful. Although my only stay in the Lone Star state was a few days in Paris for our son’s wedding, there is a definite taste to savor that is so different from the other ‘Lower 47’.

While it is true Texas gave us LBJ who spurred government handouts with his Great Society, the state retains a fiercely independent, almost defiant attitude when the federal government becomes overbearing. And lately, under Obamanomics and Obamacare, the government has become for many simply way too invasive. I don’t mean to slight other states that want the feds out of their wallets and state rights such as Alaska and other states which thumbed their collective nose at much of the stimulus with its red tape and reckless inflationary spending. Other states have expressed their sovereignty openly and proudly. But there’s something about Texas. Last week Texas made it clear that it might reject the nationalized health plan. When Texas speaks we should all listen. Here in Tennessee the state version of it is called TennCare. Way too many problems and associated health cost concerns have made this program a pathetic reflection of socialized medicine that doesn’t work elsewhere. Canada, the United Kingdom, and others have tried it and proven that when a government tries to run a business it fails miserably. Yet we don’t seem to learn from the mistakes of others especially when those trying to ram through social programs have the business IQ’s of lemmings. And too many Americans are gleefully following these empty suits over the proverbial cliff. Ah but Texas has always shown its aggravation at federal mandates and manifestos and thank God Texans are making noise. Other states for that matter deem it necessary to affirm in their legislatures their constitutional rights and sovereignty. The saving grace of America must come from a United States-- united in their opposition to a federal government that would seek to become so powerful, so overbearing, so invasive- that states rights would simply be two words with no meaning other than an obscure historical reference to what once was foundation for the survival of America.
