Juan Cole, a Professor of History at the University of Michigan, published an article titled “Sarah Palin, meet Mahmoud Ahmadinejad” on the Salon website Monday where he happily concluded the “two right-wing populists (Palin and Ahmadinejad) have a surprising amount in common.”
Like what, a taste for Jewish blood?
Ahmadinejad, holocaust denier and #1 sponsor of international terrorism on the planet, has been busy jailing, kidnapping, and murdering hundreds of political opponents the past couple of months in a brutal attempt to remain in power after an obviously rigged election. This is the same man whose ascent in politics can be directly linked to the misery of millions: Iranians who endure crushing unemployment and a moribund economy under his rule; Israelis who live in constant fear due to Iran’s advanced nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities and constant calls for their destruction; and Iraqis who have suffered greatly over the past four years due to Iran’s support of terrorist insurgents who killed many thousands of innocent people.
On the other hand, Palin is an inspiration to millions of Americans who share her values of limited government, reasonable taxation, and increased personal freedoms. She might seem a bit hokey at times, but she has never built a single IED meant to kill American soldiers, nor does she maintain a private army of thugs on motorcycles ready to crack open political dissident skulls at a moment’s notice.
And yet, according to the University of Michigan Professor guy, former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin and the dictator Ahmadinejad are two sides of the same political coin!
How does the author justify this intellectual garbage? Apparently “both [Palin and Ahmadinejad] are former governors of a northwest frontier state with great natural beauty,” “both appeal to a sort of wounded nationalism,” and “both are populists who claim to represent the little people against wily and unscrupulous elites.”
Sounds like every other politician in the world, President Obama included. Why not write the article about him? Oh yeah, Obama’s a Democrat; apparently only Republicans (or Israel) are deserve comparison with mass murderers like Ahmadinejad.
It would be nice to say that the liberal Professor guy’s article is an isolated incident. However, Democrats are becoming more and more comfortable using the language of hatred to demonize Republicans and discredit their policies whenever possible. We saw it last Friday when Nancy Pelosi referred to health insurance companies as “evil,” a term that used to be reserved for the truly appalling, like the Soviet Union ... or heroin.
Thanks to the Democrats, we now have whole swaths of American society that qualify for hated status: fat people, health insurance employees, SUV owners, the rich, white police officers, white and Hispanic firemen, conservatives, Christians, Israel supporters, bankers, and the worst of them all: seniors who refuse hospice.
Don’t get worried if you’re not on the list, some day you will be.
