Obama Admin Cashing In On HC Debate

President Barack Obama speaks at a town hall meeting about health care at Central High School in Grand Junction, Colo. Obama's push for a national health care overhaul is providing a financial windfall in the election offseason to Democratic consulting firms that are closely connected to the president and two top advisers. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)Ever since this health care “debate” began, the president and his policy advocates have decried the evil profits of the insurance companies.

There have been reports just over the last couple of days of insurance companies making record profits, right now. At a time when everybody’s getting hammered, they’re making record profits, and premiums are going up. — President Obama, 7/22/09 prime-time news conference They are enormous and powerful. They prey on our weaknesses, trying to separate the healthy from the sick. Their strategy is to confuse and exhaust their victims. And they kill people each year by denying coverage while profiting billions. Call Congress, tell them: don’t put insurance profits before health care. Support a real public option. — MoveOn.org, commercial
There are lots of similar quotes, and given the president’s love of television face time, I’m sure you’ve also seen and heard them lately as well. However, if people making profits off of health care is supposed to be so evil, explain the president’s silence over his senior adviser’s former ad firm making over $24 million since this debate began?
President Barack Obama’s push for a national health care overhaul is providing a financial windfall in the election offseason to Democratic consulting firms that are closely connected to the president and two top advisers. Coalitions of interest groups running at least $24 million in pro-overhaul ads hired GMMB, which worked for Obama’s 2008 campaign and whose partners include a top Obama campaign strategist. They also hired AKPD Message and Media, which was founded by David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama’s campaign and now to the White House. AKPD did work for Obama’s campaign, and Axelrod’s son Michael and Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe work there.
“Do as I say, not as I do” is not going to cut it. Since taking the oath, President Obama has scolded, talked down to, and demonized segments of the American populace. He has reminded us several times who’s boss, and taken the time to be very clear about what he’s saying so those below him could understand. If insurance companies making millions in profits is such a bad thing, so is making money off of the debate to render them obsolete. Using the president’s verbiage, David Axelrod’s former company is making more than it needs, and it’s time to return that money to its rightful owners. Then again, the rules he wants to impose on us would never apply to himself, his family, or those well-positioned around him.
