President Obama has joined the push to allow Gov. Deval Patrick to make a temporary appointment to the U.S. Senate, reversing an earlier pledge that he would not get involved. Representatives from Obama’s political committee Organizing for America sent out an e-mail to supporters urging them to call Bay State lawmakers and support a Beacon Hill bill allowing Patrick to appoint an interim senator in the late U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s seat.
When Massachusetts was led by a Republican governor, the Democrat super majority legislature took away his ability to name a successor for a vacant federal seat. But now that Massachusetts has a Democrat governor, all of a sudden allowing The People to vote in a special election next year isn’t a good idea. It also means that the votes needed for Obama’s health care to pass may be closer than we know. But when it comes to the word of the President, it’s just words.
