Mike Huckabee

Anti-Mormon Bigotry Tainting Republican Votes?

By John Lillpop  Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Mike Huckabee is a congenial sort of fellow, in keeping with the not- so- fine tradition of former governors from Arkansas.

Like that other, more celebrated ex-governor from Arkansas, the huckster is a slick double talker who is witty and engaging and a perfect interview target for the substance-adverse liberal media in a presidential election year.

But to be perfectly frank, Mike Huckabee stands a better chance at being elected to serve as the top Ayatollah in Iran than he does at winning the U.S. presidency.

The likelihood that Mike Huckabee will ever step foot in the Oval Office without being escorted by a tour guide is only slightly better than the odds that George W. Bush could, if he chose to, overturn the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution (Presidential term limits), announce his intent to run for a third term, and actually win re-election in November of 2008.

In other words, it ain’t gonna happen!

Still, in spite of the heavy odds against him, Mike Huckabee battles on and on and on, in a mindless pursuit not unlike that of the Eveready Bunny.

All of which causes one to inquire: What keeps Huckabee going? Why spend all that money and waste all that time on a cause that has not even a remote chance of succeeding?

The short answer: Anti-Mormon bigotry!

Huckabee is, above all else, a product of Bible thumping evangelicals in the south who resolutely believe that their particular version of Creation, Jesus Christ, God and all things good and beautiful is the only correct one.

No exceptions and zero tolerance apply here.

Naturally, a candidate who is Mormon simply does not fit the rigid standard of religiosity enforced by Huckabee and those who follow him. Forget the fact that Romney is the most Republican, most conservative, most qualified, and most devoted family person running. The Mormon brand of Christianity simply does not sell in many parts of Christendom.

Thus, the Huckster has stayed in the race for one purpose:

Derail the candidacy of Mormon Mitt Romney by covertly functioning as an unannounced surrogate for John McCain.

An even more cynical reading has Huckabee doing his dirty tricks against Romney in order to gain a place on a John McCain ticket, or a position in a John McCain administration.

Regrettably, Huckabee is not alone in his anti-Mormon hysteria. Rudy Giuliani and Pat Robertson are among the other luminaries who have been blinded by religious bigotry.

Mitt Romney is a decent, honorable, and competent man, the best candidate for the open position in the White House. His religious beliefs are personal and completely irrelevant in the election sweepstakes.

America needs Mitt Romney one hell of a lot more that it needs John McCain, Mike Huckabee, or Rudy Giuliani. Or even Pat Robertson!
