Mount Vernon Statement, Contract from America

Are Conservative Leaders Avoiding Illegal Alien Issues?

Within this past week I have encountered incidents that have put questions in my mind about the seeming lack of gusto among the “leaders” of the conservative movement in this country to take on the illegal aliens/immigration/amnesty problem.

It has seemed to me that the severity of that problem would, at least for me, place it if not on the very top of the list, at least in the top two or three. Of course Obama and the liberal Democrat Congress’ wild and profligate spending certainly is not surpassed by that issue by any means, but the huge amounts of taxpayer dollars being doled out to some 12 to 20 million law breakers, unconstitutionally, keeps rising along with their numbers here in this country. But much to my surprise, as I said above, I have witnessed three separate and distinct occasions where the expectation of some elevated degree of attention was called for, and, as the old saying goes, “the silence was deafening.” The first episode occurred when the Tea Party people produced their “Contract from America” which provided a listing of goals and the proposed solutions with which the goals would hopefully be met. There were 22 of these solutions covering most every facet of a well governed operation from an ‘All of the above Energy Policy’ to ‘No cZar Regulation without representation’. A to Z. But as I continued to read on down the list, which was certainly extensive if not comprehensive, I didn’t find one word about the illegal aliens/immigration/amnesty problem here in the United States. I wondered if it had gotten solved overnight and all of the lawbreaking aliens were on their way back to their native countries. It didn’t take me long before I woke up from that dream. Then my attention got distracted with the issuance of the well trumpeted Mount Vernon Statement to which just about every big named conservative in existence was a signatory and which is touted to be a statement of conservative principles and goals. But when I read it, oops, nothing about, you guessed it: illegal aliens/immigration/amnesty. As I was considering these stunners of what I could only call ‘absent-mindedness’ about not including the information regarding the “i.a.i.a.” problem, I remembered having read somewhere that Texas Republicans have been reluctant to enforce the border security and enforcement due to their efforts to cultivate the Hispanic vote and maintain the GOP superiority over their Democratic rivals. And in spite of the fact that they do have a greater margin of voters, the pure and simple trends are that the population count of Hispanics is growing annually and that traditionally the Hispanics favor the Democrats due to their more generous habits of doling out taxpayer dollars. California was once like Texas marginally heavier in GOP registrations but over the years from the '80s forward, the trend in Hispanics emigrating into Cal grew heavier and heavier until today the Democrats enjoy a substantial Hispanic voter registration. Texas is trying not to emulate the Golden State in that regard. But they had better watch their porous borders. A couple of days ago, I got an envelope in the regular mail from The Heritage Foundation, a decidedly conservative organization, asking me to fill out a survey form for them. Now I know that anytime I see a “survey” form that it is just a cover for a pitch for a financial donation. But I understand and I gave it my attention. The questions covered just about every range of issues known to both political parties and all their members. That is except… you’re way ahead of me and you’re right! Not even a peep (or a typo) about the now famous i. a. i. a. issue. Nothing, nada, niente, zilch. How is it that a subject that gathers so much attention in newspaper, TV, radio and Internet blogs can get so little attention from three highly regarded and politically active entities as the three mentioned above? It isn’t as though it is politically incorrect or ominously sinister or odious to a fault; no, as a matter of fact the subject comes up very often in conversations among friends and acquaintances and barroom brawls. I can understand why Democrats shy away from the subject in that a majority of Americans are of the opposite position and against it. But conservatives? I hope they aren’t crumbling.
