Earth day, Climate Change purely political

Save the Earth? Yawn!

By Felicia Benamon  Friday, April 25, 2008

The earth is a powerful sphere. What makes man, a miniscule speck in God’s universe believe that through our actions, we have the ability drastically change the earth’s weather patterns or mess up the Earth’s structure?

In an article I wrote around this time last year, I reminded all through a Bible scripture that “The Earth is the Lord’s and the Fullness Thereof” — 1 Corinthians 10:26 (KJB)”

God Almighty is the one and only Supreme Being capable of allowing any overthrow or upset in the balance of planets. The earth is still a mystery.  We don’t know everything there is to know about it, and probably will never find out its infinite mysteries. So when politicians like Al Gore and those who’ve adopted the “green” mentality and spout the mantra to address “climate change”, I continually turn a deaf ear.

All of the moaning and groaning over “climate change” is purely political.  It certainly has been overblown this year on April 22nd as I’ve been assaulted with the "Green it, Mean It” logo on FOXTV and various other networks that choose to throw environmentalism in my face.

In her usual backing of “green” causes, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) tried to use the Bible to explain how important she feels one must tend to the Earth.

“The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, ‘To minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.’ On this Earth Day, and every day, let us pledge to our children, and our children’s children, that they will have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature,” she said.

Professors of the Old Testament and other Biblical theologians have expressed concern over Pelosi’s application of Biblical verses to environmentalist causes. They say there is nothing in the Bible that closely suggests that one must take care of God’s creation in an act of worship.

“To minister to the needs of creation’- yes, but not as an act of worship. I’m not sure what she meant by that, and if I were there, I would have raised my hand and asked her to clarify that.” --Associate professor of theology, Mark Goodwin

Read more reviews on Pelosi’s comment from Bible scholars here:

I am reminded of what a dear friend of mine said through an emailed Bible devotional on Earth Day..."Let’s be sure we worship the Creator and not the created."  So true Dave.

I will point out ...there IS a worship of the Earth. Gaia.

Gaia is characterized as the Greek goddess of the Earth in Greek mythology. Today, the “Gaia Movement” is described as “an international network of individuals and groups that share a concern for living more sustainably on the earth.”

Perhaps that is where Pelosi got things a bit mixed up? Maybe she should have pulled from teachings of Gaia? That is where her heart is apparently.

I’ve been hearing the same song and dance about the need to “Save the Earth” for years and yet, the Earth is still here.  Save the Earth? From what I say?  I refuse to jump on the frantic belief of a few who see the Earth as a sphere in peril. I believe in Almighty God, that He ultimately has the final say on what happens to this planet.

I grew up with my parents instilling in me the importance of not wasting anything. But that was borne out of the belief that one must be grateful for what you have and not squander it.  There was no frantic sense that we needed to “Save the Earth.” But I will use common sense and not be wasteful.

Government has stepped in amidst the furor of the need to save the planet. If states and even other countries aren’t banning plastic grocery bags, they are charging consumers extra to use them. Instead shoppers are encouraged to use reusable cloth sacks they can bring each time they take a trip to the store.  Why punish those who prefer plastic? The plastic grocery bags can be used again. Does anyone think to use them as trash can liners? Now there’s an option. Besides, the plastic grocery bags are recyclable. So what’s the problem?

All of this hand wringing over the Earth is costing people more money. When it comes to fuel...instead of using our own oil reserves that haven’t been tapped yet, we resort to using corn to churn out Ethanol. This has driven up the price of corn. It makes no sense with food prices going up these days.

All the warnings over the environment and the Earth should have reasonable people shaking their heads. Christians especially should not fall for the alarmism over the Earth.  Instead, Christians should check a politician who chooses to use the Bible to justify a stance that runs contrary to God’s word.  Rep. Nancy Pelosi could not present a particular Bible verse to justify her environmental passion because there was none.

The Earth is in turmoil, but it’s not because of my lack of desire to lend a hand in environmental causes, that’s for sure. And we have bigger issues to worry about.
