Barack Obama, Rev. Jeremiah Wright

Show me your friends…

Well, he’s finally gone and done it. Barack Obama has thrown the right Rev. Jeremiah Wright off the planet, supposedly because the Rev. Wright made some um, rash statements.

Obama’s claim that the Rev. Wright has changed since he first met him 20 years ago, having gone totally off the deep end, is as cynical as it is specious. It’s cynical because he expects voters to believe that this whole speaking tour on which the right reverend has embarked hasn’t been meticulously pre-planned by the Obama campaign with the full cooperation of the reverend. And it’s specious in that it provides a convenient excuse for Obama to recover some moral authority, given the recent revelations about his choice of friends. This causes one to wonder what he is planning to do about William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, with whom the candidate began a relationship back in 1995. For the non-cognoscenti, Ayers and Dohrn were members of the “Weather Underground”, a radical anti-Vietnam War group that issued a “Declaration of a State of War with the United States” back in 1970 and then proceeded with a campaign of terrorist bombings, jailbreaks and rioting. The group was responsible for a Brinks robbery that resulted in the death of two State Troopers and a security guard. I suppose that people deserve a break for the things they believed and did while they were young and foolish. But Ayers and Dohrn remain unrepentant for their acts. Ayers told the New York Times back in 2001, “I don’t regret setting bombs; I feel we didn’t do enough”. So far Obama has downplayed his association with these two, much in the same way he first downplayed his association with Rev. Wright. Claiming the relationship between him and Ayers went no further than their both sitting on the board of directors of a Chicago foundation, Obama believes that this will be the end of the controversy. But as more and more evidence surfaces that perhaps the relationship between Obama and the former “Weatherpeople” is more than just a casual acquaintance through a community organization, Obama will be forced to disassociate himself with Ayers and Dohrn as well. Only question is, what Deus ex machina will Obama employ this time to achieve the desired effect? He’s already used the line; “you can’t blame me for what happened when I was only 8 years old”. But that will soon wear thin, as voters realize that while it’s true, Obama didn’t personally have anything to do with these criminal acts, but why would he hang out with people who did? Antoin “Tony” Rezko is another name in Obama’s closet full of skeletons. A Syrian immigrant who is being held on corruption charges in Chicago after failing to declare a $3.5 million payment to him by a British tycoon with a criminal record who was seeking to buy influence in acquiring a visa to immigrate to the US. Coincidentally, Mr. Rezko was a fundraiser for Obama and the two were involved in a land deal that had some questionable optics. In an effort to mitigate the damage caused by Obama’s association with Rezko, the Obama campaign donated $150,000 to charity, which presumably came from Rezko and Obama called his land deal with Rezko a “bone-headed move”. As the struggle between Obama and Hillary Clinton drags on, it becomes increasingly obvious that Obama isn’t the sweet, squeaky-clean knight his campaign claims. I never thought I’d say this, but Hillary Clinton is starting to look awfully good right now, given that we know more about her background than we do about B. Hussein Obama’s. The only people Clinton has had to disassociate herself from are Geraldine Ferraro and, of course, her husband, Bill. No big deal. Obama, on the other hand appears to be toting some serious luggage that raises a whole raft of questions about who he really is. There’s an old saying: “Show me your friends and I’ll show you who you are.” Judging by the people Obama has chosen to hang out with, there are some serious questions about who exactly the candidate actually is.
