Electronics Recycling Tax Grab Between $105 and $210 million Per Year
By Kevin Gaudet Friday, May 9, 2008The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today released its submission to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, opposing the planned program for e-waste recycling. CTF Ontario Director, Kevin Gaudet said “this program is a hidden tax grab that breaks Mr. McGuinty’s promise not to raise taxes”.
The main findings of the CTF submission are:
1. The plan is unnecessary as the market is already achieving the program’s goals without government intervention.
2. Phase 1, alone, of the Four-Phase program, at inception, is projected to impose new taxes in Ontario totaling between $105 and $210 million from consumers. In its first year the new plan will increase the cost of:
3. The program takes taxing power out of the hands of elected officials and invests it in an unelected and unaccountable body.
