“We are leaving on schedule on Friday,” White House press secretary Jay Carney told a briefing Wednesday. “It bears repeating that this is a crisis – there is no question about it. And it is a crisis in Japan. It is not a crisis in the United States.”
A very nice message to send to the people of Japan: since the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear crisis isn’t here, it’s not worth missing out on a very important trip to Rio.
Deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes said Wednesday that Obama was “hugely popular” in the region.
The president can’t miss out on an opportunity for some relatively free adoration.
