American WaBenzi

In Africa the ruling class is known as the “WaBenzi,” a term describing a corrupt government official or a family member of one. The term originates from a Bantu colloquialism with “Wa” being a prefix that refers to people and “Benzi” referring to Mercedes-Benz, a vehicle favored by African rulers. WaBenzi excel at privatizing public resources in order to further their own goals and think nothing of spending government revenues or foreign aid on themselves and their family or tribe, while the people of their nation languish in abject poverty.
America now has its very own WaBenzi in the personae of Barack and Michele Obama, whose lavish lifestyle is evocative of the “let them eat cake” attitude ascribed to Marie Antoinette. This week Obama abused America’s public resources, as he took Air Force One through a tour of some western states in order to raise funds for the 2012 election. The mustache for this trip was the announcement of a new bailout plan that would allow Americans whose mortgages were under water to refinance at a lower rate. Obama claimed this would bring relief to over 9 million American families living in homes for which they owed more than the home was worth. Additionally, he also announced a new student loan scheme that would have the American taxpayer picking up the tab of close to $1 trillion in student loans owed by college graduates. It’s clear this is nothing more than a not even thinly disguised attempt to buy votes for next year’s election by privatizing public resources i.e. taxpayers’ money, to buy the votes of college grads with debt. What’s worse, there’s not a thing the Congress can do about this, as when Obama transferred responsibilities for student loans from the private sector to the government back in 2009, he conveniently gave himself the power to do whatever he pleased through executive fiat.

Americans are constantly being bombarded with admonitions that ‘we must act now” to pass this or that bill or to spend this or that trillion on yet another stimulus. Obama’s urging the Congress to pass his jobs bill so that he can put more teachers into the classrooms of America is yet another one of those thinly disguised money laundering schemes designed to take cash out of the pockets of the great-grand children of today’s taxpayers, so that some of that money can find its way back to the Democrats’ coffers for next year’s election. The corruption and crony capitalism currently endemic in the government of the United States is so widespread that it would make many an African dictator blush. Yet day after day, Obama dreams up yet another fiscal insult to the American economy. Loading student debt onto the back of taxpayers is wrong for several reasons. First, it is immoral that the public purse should be used to pay to increase the earning power of a favored group of young people by paying off their student loans. It doesn’t teach them a sense of responsibility and further entitles an already over entitled cohort. Second, it is not equitable for the nation, as the trillion dollars in student debt being paid by taxpayers shows a marked preference for those who attend university at the expense of those who do not. Many young grads are complaining that they’re saddled with huge student debt and can’t find a job. Maybe getting a master’s degree in feminism or lesbian, gay and transgender studies wasn’t such a good idea after all. Finally, if the government picks up the tab for student loans, which is something all of us should have seen coming when the Dems passed this law, there is no incentive on the part of colleges and universities to try to keep their costs in line, as they are now able to just pass added costs on to the students, knowing that Uncle Sam will ultimately pick up the tab. It’s clear that the administration is utilizing public resources to achieve private goals. Be it the crony capitalism of funding green energy, picking up the tab for student loans, attempting to get more unionized public sector workers on the payrolls or bailing out under water mortgages with government money, the end goal is to boost the number of voters willing to sell their vote for Obama. It’s the kind of corruption one might expect to find in places like Kenya, certainly not in the United States of America.
