Belgium, like the rest of Europe, is confronted with welfare immigration. Most immigrants in Belgium are Muslims from Morocco. There is also a significant number of Turkish immigrants. The overwhelming majority of the Muslim immigrants did not come to Belgium as so-called "guest workers" in the 1960s and 70s. They arrived since the 1980s purely for the purpose of claiming benefits. They sympathize with the parties of the Left. This is the very reason why the socialist Belgian establishment has given them the right to vote. In Antwerp, the Socialist Mayor Leona Detiege defended the policy of granting citizenships (and the subsequent right to participate in the elections) to as many immigrants as possible, on the grounds that the indigenous Flemings are--quote--"politically overrepresented as the immigrants are not allowed to vote"--unquote.
