Menezes received the Humanitarian Award for an ETFO Member at the federation’s annual meeting in Toronto. The award may be granted each year to an individual or group of individuals who hold ETFO membership and who have given outstanding service to education and the community. Menezes was recognized for her initiative in founding the Horizons Children’s Centre, a non governmental organization established to assist orphans, street children, and needy children in Sandema, Builsa District, Ghana. Her vision had its beginnings in the January 1999, when a young street child asked her for money to get medicine for a sore on his leg. In April, 2000, the first students moved into their new home. The Centre’s mission is to address the basic needs of the children through the provision of food, shelter, clothing, and medical care. Formal education is provided to help the children become independent and contribute meaningfully to their community. Menezes has taken leaves of absence from her teaching position to establish the Centre and manage the organizational and bureaucratic demands of the project. “Heather’s vision and commitment are truly inspiring,” said ETFO President David Clegg. “Her efforts have both provided support to the children of Sandema and strengthened an entire community.” The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000 elementary public school teachers and education workers across Ontario and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
