With the results of the byelections in Ontario, Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals have failed once again to capture a majority government.
“Ontario’s taxpayers certainly let out a sigh of relief as the resuts came in,” says Peter Coleman, President and CEO of Ontarians for Responsible Government. “If the Liberals had been successful in Kitchener-Waterloo it would have been disastrous for the whole province.”
As it turns out, the former seat of Progressive Conservative Elizabeth Witmer will now be filled by Catherine Fife of the NDP. The Liberals maintained their seat in Vaughan.
“It is clear from last year’s provincial election and yesterday’s byelections that Ontarians simply no longer trust Dalton McGuinty,” continues Coleman. “Voters knew what was at stake in these byelections. They want to see spending restraint and proper management of our economy.”
McGuinty’s Liberals are still in the hot seat for cancelling plans for a Mississauga power plant during the previous provincial election - a decision that has resulted in a $190-million penalty. McGuinty has also refused requests to answer MPPs’ questions about ORNGE.
“Dalton McGuinty has nobody but himself to blame - he is the architect of his own misfortunes,” adds Coleman. “The message that all parties ought to take from this is that it is time to put taxpayers first, not personal ambition.”
