Move America Forward Condemns Decision

Obama administration to go forward with ‘Gitmo North’ on U.S. Soil

THOMSON, IL – The nation's largest grassroots pro-troop organization Move America Forward, expressed outrage today upon learning that the Obama Administration was moving forward with the purchase of a correctional facility in Thomson, Illinois previously marked by the Administration as the future housing of terrorist detainees from Guantanamo Bay.
The first time the Obama Administration's officials looked at purchasing Thomson prison back in 2009, Move America Forward was one of the main organizations opposing the proposed plan to move GITMO detainees onto US Soil. MAF worked with local leaders and citizens of the nearby areas to form the "Coalition to Stop GITMO North" as a voice for local citizens to speak out against using the facility as a way to keep terrorists in captivity on US soil. Move America Forward sent spokesperson and Debbie Lee to Thomson, to attend town hall meetings and speak on behalf of MAF and the Coalition to Stop GITMO North. "In 2009 I went to Thomson to speak out and to assist local citizens in organizing to express their opposition to the plan to move GITMO terrorists to their community." said Debbie Lee, whose son Marc Alan Lee, was the first US Navy SEAL to be killed in the war in Iraq on September 2, 2006. Move America Forward sent a delegation of 6 representatives to GITMO in 2008 to tour the current facility. Debbie Lee as part of that group, determined that the facility was well run and far from the nightmarish place depicted by the media.

"The first time Eric Holder and the Justice Department brought forward this plan to bring terrorists to US Soil and turn Thomson into GITMO NORTH, the citizens of the surrounding areas as well as people all over the country expressed their disapproval with thousands of petitions signed and people speaking their minds. Together we successfully stopped that plan...or so we thought." said Lee. "Today we learned from a statement by House Appropriations Chair Hal Rogers that the Obama Administration intends to go ahead with the purchase of the facility -without- Congressional approval, once again opening the door to the possibility of GITMO North. We continue to oppose this plan because it would give terrorists protections and legal rights such that American citizens get, rights that terrorists do not deserve. Also, having this facility on US soil puts American civilians at greater risk of a terrorist attack on US soil. By going around Congress and trying to push this through together, President Obama, Eric Holder and his Justice Department will definitely be re-awakening the tsunami of public outrage and opposition that crashed down upon them in 2009, the first time they tried this." concluded Lee. Debbie Lee and Move America Forward still stand against the idea of moving terrorists to U.S. Soil and continue to support keeping the facility at Guantanamo Bay open. Move America Forward and the Coalition to Stop GITMO NORTH may resume protests or rallies if necessary to counter this latest move by the Obama Administration.
