UN Climate Deadlock Solidified

‘Cooling World’ Is Hot Potato For UN Climate Summit

The world’s climate has cooled during 2011 and 2012, temperature data from Britain’s Met Office reveals — just before this year’s talks on cutting global greenhouse gas emissions. The figures show that, although global temperatures are still well above the long-term average, they have fallen significantly since the record seen in 2010. The findings could prove politically sensitive, coming ahead of the United Nation’s climate summit in Doha, Qatar, where the global system for regulating greenhouse gas emissions faces collapse. --Jonathan Leake, The Sunday Times,18 November 2012

China, India, South Africa and Brazil say a climate agreement expected to take effect in 2020 won’t be a “new regime,” potentially setting up a confrontation with the United States, which is seeking to eliminate a firewall in negotiations between developed and developing nations. The four countries are reining in expectations for the Durban Platform, according to a statement released following a meeting of the so-called Basic bloc in Beijing. --Alex Morales, Bloomberg, 21 November 2012 Unfolding in the shadow of the greatest crisis in the BBC’s 90-year history has been another scandal, rather less publicised, which again reveals how profoundly the BBC has gone off the rails, morally and professionally. The BBC had spent large sums of our money fielding an array of lawyers against a pensioner from Wales to hide what I called, with considerable understatement, “a dirty little secret”. But that secret has now been disclosed to the world, confirming how seriously the BBC has been misrepresenting its policy on one of the most far-reaching issues of our time. --Christopher Booker, The Sunday Telegraph, 18 November 2012 Besides the furore over bungled BBC journalism, 28 Gate - the Beeb’s refusal to name the “scientific experts” who convinced the broadcaster to take a firmly warmist position when reporting climate change – is far more profoundly serious than the BBC and its critics yet realise. What a humble freedom-of-information request has exposed, and called into the question, is the conduct and judgement of the BBC Trust itself. What the saga exposes is a range of mental black spots that have affected the judgement of the corporation’s key figures, who are otherwise intelligent and rational, for a decade or more. It’s almost as if somebody invented a virus that causes people to act strangely, but it only affects one topic of discussion. -- Andrew Orlowski, The Register, 19 November 2012
