The Palestinians Hudna for Statehood

Living under constant threats of rocket attacks, Israel launched “Operation Pillar Defense” on the 14th of November. Approximately seven days later, on November 21st, a ceasefire was established temporarily ending the violence in Gaza and throughout other locations inside Israel.
Palestinian terrorists from Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Al Aqsa Martyr Brigades, Fatah, and others launched well over 1,363 rockets into Israel. This was a joint endeavor fueled by political aspirations seeking statehood. Calling the action to end violence in Israel a “ceasefire” is a mistake. This action should be declared a Hudna—a temporary disruption or “calm.” Palestinians were eager to engage in violence against Israel. They knew they would glean international support of condemnation against Israel. This was obvious based off the magnitude of support they received throughout the Middle East and other parts of the world.

The attacks which initially sparked “Operation Pillar Defense” were tactical distractions to a greater strategic plan. On the 14th of November, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry released a statement saying, "Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr condemned the series of air strikes that Israel is currently conducting against Gaza Strip and which led to the killing of Ahmed Al-Jaabari. He called on Israel to stop its strikes on Gaza Strip immediately." On the 15th of November, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said, “The Israeli policies, particularly ever-expanding Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, continue to block every effort towards permanent peace.” On the same day Turkey released their statement, Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, called for an “immediate halt of the shooting, shelling, or any other type of violence in the Gaza Strip.” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei also condemned Israel’s activities by saying, “The current regional situation highlights the importance of urgent solution to the Palestinian issue. The international community should attach high importance and make greater efforts to this end.” While “Operation Pillar Defense” destroyed many high valued terrorists throughout Gaza, other Palestinian leaders were busy drafting documentation for the international community’s consideration. In fact, four documents were created during the seven day military operation. All four documents were approved by Palestinian authorities. The most important expresses “Israel’s withdrawal from Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and for the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, primarily their right to self-determination and to an independent State.” The international community will review these documents later this week at the United Nations. This Thursday, the 29th of November, during the 67th Session of the United Nations, supplement #35 titled Report of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will be reviewed. On Friday, the 30th of November, items #36 and #37 will also be considered--Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine. Palestinians will plead their case seeking total independence. As UN members consider the Palestinian’s case, Israel will sit and wait with their hands bound behind their backs knowing many nation states recently condemned Israel for defending and protecting its own people. What will come of Israel in the near future? How much power could this give the Muslim Brotherhood? Most importantly, how could this potential vote affect the United States and our own national interests throughout the Middle East? In just a few days, we may get those answers.
