Liberals causing education chaos:  Who’s running the show?

TORONTO – At this critical time for Ontario students and their parents, the Liberal government has demonstrated that they are no longer in control of Ontario’s education system, Ontario PC Education Critic Lisa MacLeod said today.

“Parents deserve to know who has made the decision to allow union leaders to use our kids’ education as a bargaining chip, causing chaos in Ontario’s schools,” MacLeod said. “Everyone is butting in, but who’s in control? Is it Liberal leadership hopefuls Kathleen Wynne, Gerard Kennedy, and Sandra Pupatello? Is it the outgoing Premier desperately trying to salvage a legacy? Is it Liberal Party president Yasir Naqvi? Or is it the ETFO leadership, which supports the politically-active Working Families Coalition? “Either way, it’s clear that everyone is running the Ministry of Education except for the person being paid to do it.” Laurel Broten and the Liberals brought the House back early to pass legislation that could end the rotating strikes, MacLeod noted, but four months later, they still refuse to use it. “What’s more important: parents and students, or politics?” “For a decade teachers’ union leaders have backed the Liberal government and in return the Liberals handed over more and more power and money to them,” MacLeod said, citing the Liberals can end these strikes, but instead choose to put Ontario parents, students and our hard-working teachers – who just want to be teaching – in the crosshairs. “The Liberals need to stop putting their political interests ahead of our kids’ education. It is time for them to finally take the side of teachers, parents and the students and put an end to these strikes!”
