Why have resolutions and "inspections" if they mean nothing?

How useless is the UN in stopping Iran nukes? Completely!

You might have seen over the weekend that U.S. and European Union officials are hopeful that Iran will show up in Kazakhstan for talks concerning Iran’s development of nuclear weapons, which the west is hoping to stop, or maybe just “contain” if you listen to the testimony of likely incoming Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

The Obama crew is said to be skeptical that Iran will actually follow through on any promise it makes – they might be learning a thing or two! – but they’re still hopeful that the talks will proceed. I have a question, my friends! Isn’t Iran banned by a resolution of the United Nations from having nuclear weapons? Isn’t the UN’s so-called “watchdog” group, the International Atomic Energy Agency, supposed to be doing inspections to make sure Iran doesn’t build any bombs? Well then, why do we need to go to Kazakhstan and have negotiations? If the UN has banned Iran from having the bomb, that settles the matter, right? Of course it doesn’t. Because the UN is a completely feckless organization that scares no one, and that has no moral authority whatsoever. The UN can pass all the resolutions it wants, but the people in this world who are hostile to peace, liberty and human rights thumb their noses and do whatever they want. That’s why we have to impose economic sanctions, which don’t appear to be deterring the Iranians in the slightest. And that’s why Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has to keep threatening a nuclear strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities – a threat that appears to have no support whatsoever from the United States. Why do we waste our time with organizations like the UN and the IAEA, which make grand pronouncements that everyone knows are meaningless? Even leaving aside the UN’s obvious bias in support of many of our enemies, it is ultimately a worthless body that spends a lot of money and wastes a lot of time saying things and doing nothing. Maybe the United States should re-examine its support of, and membership in, an organization that passes resolutions and makes pronouncements but accomplishes nothing whatsoever. Words will not stop rogue nations from obtaining nuclear weapons. The only thing that will do that is action, if anyone out there would be interested in doing what real leaders do.
