Civil War

Karl Rove and his American Crossroads PAC have declared war on the grassroot conservatives. The growing numbers who associate themselves with the Tea Party, Agenda 21, School Choice activism and a host of other groups seeking a return to smaller government are a threat to the establishment element of the Grand Old Party. Rove is architect-emeritus of the establishment, make no mistake.
The utter arrogance of Rove and his ilk has blinded them to the realities of life. Their notion is that “money talks and the rest of us have to walk.” There is some truth to that, but it does not change the facts on the ground. Independents, social conservatives and those who can discern no difference between parties stayed home by the millions in this last election cycle. Does Rove actually think that by picking candidates the establishment can right the GOP ship? I think he has it exactly backwards. Why would he want to alienate the very people who will staff the army of volunteers needed to counter the Democrat ground game? Perhaps he knows something the rest of us don’t. However, I doubt he knows anything about dealing with the Tea Party or other activists. Rove’s actions have hit close to home in Iowa. He and his minions have already fired the opening salvo in what is likely to be a bloody war between Steve King and his loyal (and active) followers in Iowa and the so-called Republican establishment. Steve is just the kind of guy to make a run at Iowa’s upcoming open senate seat just because someone said he shouldn’t. I am not sure how this will all turn out, but there are already many lessons to be learned from this idiocy.

First, the GOP establishment has fallen into the short-term action trap, thinking that picking candidates will reduce election-loss embarrassment. The goal of a candidate is to win, not lose gracefully. As the old line goes, one ought to hate losing more than one loves winning. Second, without the grassroots activists, there really is no future for the GOP. If permanent minority positions are preferred by the establishment, then they need to understand that most of us are going to find a winning formula with or without the establishment. Finally, the establishment needs to understand that they are being perceived as no better than the elitist-rulers who are so prevalent on the Progressive side of the aisle. We fought a revolution to throw off tyrants, and we will willingly do so again. This next revolution will be far more peaceful, but no less effective. Constitutionally-limited government must be the goal. Sam Clovis is the host of the talk radio show—Impact with Sam Clovis—that can be heard on KSCJ, 1360 am, Sioux City, IA.
