Government employees owing back taxes would be fired...unless they're in Congress

Congress seeks to exempt itself from the ‘Federal Employee Tax Accountability Act’

Today, the "Tax Accountability Act of 2013" (H.R. 249) is expected to come to the floor of the house for a vote. If it passes, the new law would mandate the firing of any federal employee who is carrying a "seriously delinquent" tax debt. It would also prevent the hiring of individuals in the same situation.
The bill is strongly opposed by Democrats who say it unfairly targets federal workers who've been negatively impacted by "the sequester." Colleen M. Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, is having an absolute fit over the proposed law, calling it the perfect example of an "out of touch" Congress. According to Forbes, 311,566 federal workers would be affected. Collectively, they owe just over a 3.5 billion dollars in back taxes. Last year, the House passed similar legislation only to see it fail in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Here's the thing. Kelley's right. This law does, in fact, show how out of touch Congress is. However, it’s not because her knee-jerk union mentally requires her to protect a gaggle of tax deadbeats. ....It’s because members of Congress have made themselves exempt from it. This law should be a painfully obvious no-brainer. Every member of Congress must recognize that the people lording over the average American should, first and foremost, be held to the laws that they would apply to others. There should be little or no debate, the law should pass, and it should apply to every single man or woman in a government job. It doesn’t matter how miniscule or unimportant you think your position is. No one cares if you’re a conservative or a liberal, a Republican or a Democrat. If your livelihood is dependent upon wealth confiscated from others, you sure as hell had better be willing to pay your own taxes. Instead, we have much of the House actively fighting against it, and the rest too weak - too despicably overcome with cowardice - to make it self-applicable. Step one in restoring this nation should be a Constitutional Amendment stating that "No federal law shall be passed from which any member or former member of the federal government is exempted." If it existed, there would be no sequester, Obamacare would never have made it to the floor, and most of the gun control debate would likely be over before it started. This is utterly and completely shameful.
