Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Egypt, Abdul Fatah Al-Sisi, whose strategy forced Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi out of office, placing him under house arrest yesterday, has been Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces for less than a year. Al-Sisi was installed as Commander-in-Chief on August 12, 2012. Egyptian Acting President Adly Mansour who replaced Mohamed Morsi assumed office on an historic date: July 4, 2013.

Al-Sisi received his commission as a military officer in 1977, serving in the mechanized infantry, specializing in anti-tank warfare and mortar warfare. He became Commander of the Northern Military Region-Alexandria in 2008 and then Director of Military Intelligence and Reconnaissance. Al-Sisi was the youngest member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces of Egypt. On August 12, 2012, then Egyptian President Mohamad Morsi made the decision to replace Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the chief-of-staff of the Egyptian armed forces with Al-Sisi. At that time Al-Sisi also took the post of minister of defense in the Qandil Cabinet. History will record that on July 1, 2013, the Egyptian Army delivered an ultimatum that called on Mohamad Morsi to resolve the political crisis in Egypt in 48 hours. On July 3, 2013, having failed to meet the deadline, Egypt’s armed forces overthrew Morsi, installing Adly Mansour as the interim head of state in his place--and ordering the arrest of many members of the Muslim Brotherhood on charges of “inciting violence and disturbing general security and peace.” Al-Sisi went on television to announce that the president had “failed to meet the demands of the Egyptian people” and declared that the constitution would be suspended. If anyone in the Obama administrations is Googling Al-Sisi the morning after Egypt’s epic events, they will find that included in his early life and military education, Al-Sisi attended a War Course, at the US Army War College, United States in 2006. Fodder for famed astro-turfer David Axelrod to blame Bush.
