Seriously, what is going on with John McCain? First he throws his colleagues under the immigration bus, then he gives an interview to The New Republic so chock full of crazy that it's hard to know what to make of it. Maybe he's never heard of Benghazi, but to hear him praise Hillary's tenure as Secretary of State is nothing short of nauseating.
Asked what he thought of the job she did, McCain said "I think she did a fine job. She’s a rock star. She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world."
Honestly. He said that. Apparently, he even managed it with a straight face. Then he was asked if Rand Paul and Ted Cruz have "frozen" the GOP leadership in such a way that nothing can get done.
"I am not sure if it has been frozen," McCain said. "But certainly there is an element in the party that has been there prior to [World War II], the isolationist, America-Firsters. Prior to World War I, it was Western senators, and then Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh, and then Taft versus Eisenhower. Even Reagan—Reagan’s presidency was perfect without ever a problem [said sarcastically]—there was an isolationist wing that fought against Reagan. And now the bad economy has exacerbated what has always been out there."
So, in McCain's mind, adherence to the Constitution is now a synonym for isolationism and appeasement.
Asked what he’d do if Rand Paul were running against Hillary Clinton in 2016, McCain laughed and said "It's gonna be a tough choice."
Just…wow.
He spent most of the rest of his interview lauding the way President Obama has grown in office and defending his ill-conceived desire to involve the U.S. in the Syrian civil. He talks legacy, Sarah Palin, and Mitch McConnell, but eventually the whole thing devolves into a staggering laundry list of hair-brained schemes, outdated thinking, and denial of reality. It’s worth reading, just to see how far off the reservation McCain really is.
My favorite quote comes when he's discussing how close he is with his fellow Senators - among them left-wing stalwarts like Chuck Schumer and Carl Levin.
“Lindsey Graham," He claims, "is like a son to me.”
That just about says it all…
