Obama's new orders serve as evidence of his spectacular gun control defeat

Obama issues two new worthless gun control executive orders

Despite pounding the gun-control drum like he's bringing up the rear in a marching band, President Obama has come up empty where actual legislation is concerned. He's exploited tragedy, ginned up bogus statistics, and ignored reality all in an effort to curb the 2nd Amendment. ...and he's failed in spectacular fashion.
Still, he's not done beating his dead horse. Today, the administration announced two new executive orders in a move that shows the President isn't finished with this issue. They also show just how thoroughly his anti-gun agenda has been defeated. The first policy will put an end to federal regulations which allow U.S. military weapons which were sold to U.S. allies to be reimported into the United States by private individuals or companies. Basically, it means no more surplus military arms if they were sold to other countries. Before you get outraged, consider the fact that - since 2005 - only 250,000 such guns have been allowed to re-enter the country.

When you consider that there are over 300 million guns in the U.S. already, you begin to see how truly limp this measure is. Yes, it's irritating that law-abiding citizens are once again being targeted by a federal gun law, but in practice the impact will be utterly negligible. The second order will prevent those who would be unable to pass an individual background check from ducking the law by registering their firearms to a trust or to a company. Right now, if it's illegal for you to register certain types of firearms (namely machine guns and short-barrel shotguns) you can register them to a business and avoid the issue. It's not quite that simple, but that's the gist of it. Trustees and employees who will be in possession of the gun in question will now need to pass a check just as if they were buying it for personal use. We're sure that all those murderers in Chicago and Detroit - who've obviously acquired their automatic AK-47's by registering them to a trust - are disappointed, but for most this is, again, a big bunch of nothing. To put all of this in perspective, remember that - just six months ago - we were talking about across the board rifle bans and widespread handgun restrictions. Since the vast, overwhelming, majority of firearms used in the commission of crimes are illegal to begin with, neither of these new laws are likely to have any tangible benefit in terms of preventing violence. More likely, they're just to remind the liberal left that Obama hasn't forgotten about them. He knows his base still hates guns, and even though that pesky Constitution keeps getting in his way, he'll keep trying to do what he can. Which, clearly, is next to nothing.
