Like clockwork, gun-grabbing ghouls crawl out of the woodwork

Feinstein pounces on Navy Yard shooting, demands more gun control

UPDATE: According to CNN's Pamela Brown, the FBI has now confirmed that NO AR-15 was used in the attack. Feinstein and Morgan were even MORE wrong....
FBI Washington field office just confirmed gunman was NOT armed with AR15. Spokesperson says 1 shotgun and 2 pistols recovered — Pamela Brown (@PamelaBrownCNN) September 17, 2013
If you watched any of CNN's Monday night coverage, you enjoyed a steady stream of errors. Piers Morgan spent the evening informing you that the killer used an assault rifle he'd purchased in Virginia, while the crawl at the bottom of the screen repeatedly referred to the murder weapons as an "AR-15 shotgun" and a handgun.
Senator Dianne Feinstein wasted no time continuing her ghoulish habit of exploiting tragedy to justify her decades long attack on the 2nd Amendment. She issued the following statement demanding Congress implement strict new gun control laws:
This is one more event to add to the litany of massacres that occur when a deranged person or grievance killer is able to obtain multiple weapons - including a military style assault rifle - and kill many people in a short amount of time. When will enough be enough? Congress must stop shirking its responsibility and resume a thoughtful debate on gun violence in this country. We must do more to stop this endless loss of life.

Of course, we now know that things are not so cut and dried. According to multiple sources, Piers and Feinstein had it wrong. The shooter arrived at the D.C. Navy Yard carrying only a shotgun, which he had purchased a week before. He then took a pair of handguns from his victims. As reported - sans Morgan retraction - this morning by CNN:
However, federal law enforcement sources told CNN Tuesday that authorities have recovered three weapons from the scene of the mass shooting, including one -- a shotgun -- that investigators believe Alexis brought in to the compound. The other two weapons, which sources say were handguns, may have been taken from guards at the Navy complex. The sources, who have detailed knowledge of the investigation, cautioned that initial information that an AR-15 was used in the shootings may have been incorrect. It is believed that Alexis had rented an AR-15, but returned it before Monday morning's shootings. Authorities are still investigating precisely how many weapons Alexis had access to and when.
NBC News is reporting it this way:
The gunman was armed with an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and a handgun when he was killed, authorities said. But law enforcement officials told NBC News they believed he arrived packing only the shotgun, which he bought last week from a gun dealer in Lorton, Va., about 20 miles from Washington.
So, as always, it seems those on lifelong anti-gun crusades saw an opening and they took it. It didn't matter that the facts weren't in, as long as they could exploit death to achieve a successful end to their ever-present crusades. No one wants a psycho like the one who shot up the Navy Yard to be able to purchase a firearm - of any kind. So far, though, we have no indication that any of Feinstein's proposed methods - including "universal background checks" would have stopped him. When the facts in this case become clearer, maybe we'll have some better suggestions. If someone can figure out a way to keep a basic shotgun out of the hands of an ex-soldier who sought treatment for anger issues and voices in his head, I'm all ears. However, there's one caveat. The answer has to take into account that there are an estimated 55-70 million law-abiding, gun-owning, households in the United States. The majority of those are shotguns. No one but the furthest left of the foamy-mouthed gun-haters has tried to introduce legislation targeting them. Heck, Vice President Joe Biden even recommends shotgun ownership, so you can fire a couple rounds into the air when you feel threatened. Whatever mental health solution we implement cannot trample the rights of sane, legal, firearm owners. ...or Joe Biden.
