Demand for euthanasia grows in Belgium, with sex-change recipients’ being part of the drive

A woman in Belgium elected to end her life via a euthanasia procedure after a sex-change operation that changed her from Nancy into Nathan failed to meet her expectations. Apparently unable to continue the individual opted for legally assisted suicide as provided by national law.
According to the Christian Institute, Nancy Verhelst, 44, wanted to look like a man and had hormone therapy in 2009 followed by surgery last year. She said her new body features did not match “expectations” and she did not want to be a “monster”. She told a local newspaper, “I was the girl that nobody wanted” when she was growing up, and was simply “tolerated” by her family. Hours before death she told the press “I was ready to celebrate my new birth. But when I looked in the mirror, I was disgusted with myself.” The problem is not new and research at the University of Exeter in southwest England has revealed that a large number of people who attempt to resolve life issues through sex-change surgery end up committing suicide. There have been some estimates that the figure is as high as 31%. Professor Chris Hyde from the university stated “While no doubt great care is taken to ensure that appropriate patients undergo gender reassignment, there’s still a large number of people who have the surgery but remain traumatised – often to the point of committing suicide.”

Belgium followed neighbouring Holland in 2002 in legalizing euthanasia, and last year 1,432 people opted to end their lives via the law’s provisions, an increase of 25% from the year before. What’s more 1 in 50 Belgians are now dying this way, hot on the heels of the Dutch who are up to 1 in 30, thanks to a policy of mobile euthanasia teams. It is horribly ironic that the Dutch, who endured so much suffering from Nazi Germany just 70 some years ago, who went to such lengths to hide Jews to prevent the furtherance of the holocaust, have allowed themselves to degenerate into this kind of legalized killing. Damien Gayle, writing in the Daily Mail stated “A survey earlier this year found 32 per cent of assisted deaths (in Belgium) are done without request and 47% of the assisted deaths go unreported. In one case, a 44-year-old woman with chronic anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder, was euthanised, along with a 64-year-old woman who was suffering from chronic depression.” The chilling way in which Gayle writes “was euthanised” makes it sound like they went to the vet for a procedure. This increased de-humanization is allowing lawmakers in this European monarchy of eleven million to now consider offering euthanasia to children under 18, as well as advance the idea that ‘sometimes it’s just best’ and to go ahead without proper consent. The one dimensional thinking approach to this is allowing common threads to be ignored. The relationship between sex-change operations and suicide is already established, but we are now on the way to linking the operations with euthanasia. People have sex-change operations because of all kinds of personal identity issues. In many ways it’s no different from homosexuality; it’s still a gender identity issue that has to be addressed. Unfortunately liberal thinkers blindly support the idea that the operation and therapy will fix the issue when in fact it just complicates it. History has already taught us this but lefty activists are quick to explain away failure as the fault of the experiment, not ready to admit that when the data doesn’t back up their theory it might actually be that the theory that is flawed. Bruce Reimer (1965-2004), a Canadian, is a classic example. Born as a twin boy, a flawed circumcision left him without a penis. Enter Dr John Money who believed that gender was a result of social constructions rather than nature and saw Bruce as the ideal candidate to test his theory. Bruce became Brenda and was surgically altered and raised as a girl. But ‘she’ continued to act like a boy, having no friends and being called cavewoman by other kids. Faced with an out of control teen, the parents told him the truth and he reverted to being a male. Dr. Money though had already written medical papers touting his successes. When Bruce, who was now going as David, found out it led him to a fresh depression and eventually suicide. Charles Kane, a British man spent £100,000 on procedures to become a woman but then changed himself back. He said “Based on my own experiences, I believe sex-change operations should not be allowed, and certainly not on the NHS, People who think they are a woman trapped in a male body are, in my opinion, completely deluded. I certainly was. I needed counselling, not a sex-change operation.” The advance of sex-change therapy as well as euthanasia, along with their acceptability and the relationship of one leading to the other has to be addressed and stopped. The left-wing deception that man can accomplish anything in curing the human soul is a Tower of Babel lie. The Bible makes it clear to us who we should be and only in it can we address the reasons why we may be different. People need hope to defeat the compulsion to end it all. A culture of life looks forward to new possibilities but a culture that accepts death as a solution is sliding down a slippery slope like a downhill skier toward its own end.
