NEPAL: Christian Killed While Praying for His Attacker

Sources: Voice of the Martyrs USA, Gospel for Asia An elder of the Believers Church in Nepal was tragically killed in the early morning hours of October 20th while praying for someone who was supposedly quite ill. At 3 a.m., 36-year-old Debalal was called to the home of Kumar Sardar who urgently requested prayer, stating that he was experiencing pain. At first, Debalal was reluctant to visit the man's home due to the late hour and also because Kumar and his family were known to be devout Hindus.
During the prayer time, Kumar left the room, returning with an iron rod and a sharp, curved knife called a khukuri. He then began beating Debalal severely with the iron rod prior to slitting the unsuspecting believer's throat. None of the neighbours, who should have heard the attack taking place, intervened. While Kumar is presently in police custody, Debalal's distraught wife and sons are now experiencing tremendous grief over the vicious act of violence that was perpetrated against their loved one. Other reports of persecution in Nepal can be found at the Nepal Country Report. Please ask the Lord to be especially near to Debalal's wife and sons as they come to terms with their sudden loss. Pray that they will sense the comforting presence of Jesus who has promised to be with them in a special way during this time of great suffering. In keeping with His admonition to pray for our persecutors (Matthew 5:44), let's intercede for the Hindu extremist who killed Debalal...that he will be brought to justice in this life and, more importantly, to repentance and eternal salvation in preparation for the next. Along with needed protection, may the Lord grant the believers of Nepal a spirit of boldness so they will continue serving Him in spite of the dangers they face.

ERITREA: Total of 185 Christians Arrested At Prayer Meeting

Source: Release International Eritrean security forces have arrested 185 Christians following a raid on a prayer meeting. Most of those arrested were women. It's believed that these Christians had gathered in the suburb of Maitemenai (north of the capital, Asmara) to pray about the dangerous exodus of Eritreans from the country. "The arrest has alarmed underground church leaders who fear that this may be a sign of things to come," states Paul Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of Release International in the United Kingdom. He adds that "church leaders fear this mass arrest could herald a new clampdown on Christians and a wave of further detentions." Eritrea is currently detaining more than a thousand Christians because of their faith. Many others face harassment and other forms of persecution. While the whereabouts of the latest detainees has not been officially confirmed, their relatives believe some are being held at a police station in an adjoining district of Edaga Hamus. In 2002, the Eritrean government shut down all churches not belonging to the Orthodox, Catholic and Lutheran denominations, and has since been arresting leaders not affiliated with these religious groups. Severe restrictions have also been imposed on the permitted denominations, ensuring that outspoken leaders are persecuted. The UN's Special Rapporteur on human rights reports that thousands of Eritreans are fleeing their country every month, despite an alleged 'shoot-to-kill policy' which was reportedly implemented in an effort to thwart citizens who are attempting to leave. For a recently aired 10-minute audio news interview on the plight presently facing Christians in Eritrea, please go to our online audio file. If you are seeking a way to help our suffering Eritrean brothers and sisters in Christ, you may do so through VOMC's Underground Church Fund. Just as God safely led the Israelites out of captivity during an extremely volatile time in ancient history, may the same be true for these modern-day believers whose lives are dangerously at risk. Likewise, pray for His supernatural provision to be made available to them -- whether it be practical necessities such as food, clean drinking water, and a safe warm place to lay their heads; or the spiritual fortitude and faith to continue on another day. May their courage and long-suffering be rewarded in ways that far exceed their greatest expectations (Ephesians 3:20).

PAKISTAN: Punjab Christian Accused of Blasphemy Presently in Hiding

Source: Release Partners Another blasphemy row has broken out in a Lahore township where Christians fear they may become targets of violence. Adnan Masih, a 25-year-old Christian teacher, has been in hiding since October 8th after being accused of writing blasphemous comments in a book about Islam. According to an employee of a glass and aluminium business, the book was left in the shop where Adnan's brother also happens to work. Consequently, the shop owner, Mushtaq Masih, was immediately taken into custody in Adnan's place. In addition, the brother and uncle of the accused are being held illegally for the same reason. Christians residing in this area of Lahore, known as Bahadar Pura Bahar colony, say they fear a repeat of the devastating riot that took place in Joseph Colony during March of this year. (Click here to read a past report on this incident.) Local police have been urged by Release partners to implement security measures in order to protect Christians and avoid any further outbreak of unnecessary violence. To view a four-minute video clip reporting on the dangers of Pakistan's blasphemy law, go to Persecution.TV. Pray for God's peace and protection over the many Christian families residing in the Bahadar Pura Bahar colony of Lahore. Ask Him to intervene on behalf of those who are being unjustly detained, bringing about their soon release. Please also intercede on behalf of Adnan, who needs God's protection as he awaits justice from those representing the law. And for his accusers, who are responsible for his pending arrest, may they discover the truth of the Gospel for themselves and the joy of personally knowing Jesus as their Saviour and Lord. We encourage you to share your prayers on behalf of our suffering brothers and sisters in Christ by posting on VOMC’s prayer wall.
