A history lesson for the caller who says 'no self-respecting black man' would vote Republican

A caller to the show on Thursday excoriated me for being a Republican, informing me that "no self-respecting black man would support the Republican Party" because it is the party of Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond.

Now for one thing, both of the aforementioned gentlemen are, um, no longer with us. But beyond that, I think our friend needs a little history lesson. Here are some things I don't think he knows:
  • Strom Thurmond was a Democrat during the years he worked in opposition to racial integration. He became a Republican in his later years when the politics of the south trended in that direction, but the Strom Thurmond people associate with racism and segregation was a Democrat.
  • In 1865, when the 13th Amendment was passed abolishing slavery, it was supported by 100 percent of Republicans and 23 percent of Democrats.
  • In 1868, when the 14th Amendment was passed giving citizenship to former slaves, it was supported by 90 percent of Republicans and 0 percent of Democrats.
  • In 1870, when the 15th Amendment was passed giving former slaves the right to vote, it was supported by 100 percent of Republicans and 0 percent of Democrats.
  • When the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed, it was supported by 79 percent of Republicans and 64 percent of Democrats.
But there was one major piece of legislation that was passed with nothing but Democrat votes, and you know what that was? ObamaCare! So how can a self-respecting black man support the Republican Party? I have a better question: How can a self-respecting black man spout off on a radio show without knowing the facts?
