Real Time with Bill Maher: "Common sense gun control" is really just a thinly-veiled attack on the civil rights of gun owners

MN Democrat Rep. Keith Ellison says he 'wishes' his party would 'come out' against the 2nd Amendment

Keith Ellison is not known for being particularly smart. He gets by on the standard left-wing canards of incendiary race-baiting and income inequality rhetoric, but no one would accuse him of being a "big thinker." Even his own party spends a fair amount of time trying to distance itself from his proclamations.
However, on Friday night's Real Time with Bill Maher, he said something that the Democrat Party should embrace. According to Maher, who - of course - is an admitted gun owner, America is a country ruled by crazed gang of radical gun nuts. He's terribly upset that the Constitution is standing in the way of putting an end to this, so he wants it altered. To that end, he asked Ellison why the Democrat party doesn't just 'come out' of the anti-gun closet and wage open warfare against the 2nd Amendment.
"Then why doesn’t your party come out against the Second Amendment? It’s the problem." Maher asked. "I sure wish they would," replied Ellison. "I sure wish they would." When Maher pointed out, correctly, that Democrats try to have it both ways where the 2nd Amendment is concerned; Ellison said "You have got to check out the progressive caucus. We have come out very strong for common-sense gun safety rules." "Common-sense gun safety is bullshit," Maher said.

Isn't this refreshing? Here we have a sitting Representative freely admitting what we've always known: Democrats despise the 2nd Amendment, and they secretly wish their party would just drop the pretense of support. Moreover, Ellison is admitting that the soundbyte friendly "common sense gun control" is really just a thinly-veiled attack on the civil rights of gun owners. Rep. Ellison may be a statist rube, but at least he's an honest one. Of course, Maher and Ellison ignore the obvious: the Democrat party doesn't openly target the 2nd Amendment because, if they did, they'd never win another election outside of New York, Washington D.C., Seattle, and San Francisco. They hide their intentions precisely because they know the overwhelming majority of Americans would never support them. So, with that in mind, we'd like to offer the Dems some advice: There's still time. You've got about seven months before the midterms, and then another two years before the 2016 presidential showdown. That's plenty of time to reveal your not-so-secret hatred of gun rights. By all means, if you're a Democrat who's running for re-election or for President, listen to Representative Ellison and publicly denounce the 2nd Amendment. You're already fighting this fight anyway, so why not make it official? Nothing would make Conservative candidates happier.
