“Once that 2014 open enrollment period has been set, they are set permanently.” – HHS official Michael Hash, March 11 “March 31st is the deadline for enrollment. You’ve heard us make that clear.” – Press Secretary Jay Carney, March 21
“There is no delay beyond March 31.” – HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, March 12 “We have no plans to extend the open enrollment period. In fact, we don’t actually have the statutory authority to extend the open enrollment period in 2014.” - Health and Human Services (HHS) official Julie Bataille, March 11Now, of course, they've decided to announce that they'll just ignore March 31st. Oh, sure, the deadline is still there in some nebulous, arbitrary, sense but they're not going to enforce it. In reality, they've implemented an open-ended "non-extension" that will extend until... Well, no one knows. 'Until it doesn't' seems to be the best guess. April 15th has been rumored but, so far, no one is willing to announce a new date. That’s probably because they don't want to be embarrassed - again - when they're forced to move it. So, if it's April 1st and you've missed the deadline, how do you get around the fact that you've shirked you "patriotic, moral, and religious" obligation to sign up for ObamaCare? What will it take to release you from the unalterable shackles of the President's rigid due-date? Apparently, you have to check a box on the website. From the Washington Post:
Under the new rules, people will be able to qualify for an extension by checking a blue box on HealthCare.gov to indicate that they tried to enroll before the deadline. This method will rely on an honor system; the government will not try to determine whether the person is telling the truth. That's right. The President's epic failure "signature legislation" is now running on the "honor system." Congratulations, Democrats. The Obama administration has officially wandered into laughing stock territory.
