What doesn’t break you makes you stronger

What doesn’t break you makes you stronger. That’s certainly the case for British artist Penelope Timmis, who 15 years ago became a widow in her 40s when she lost her husband, Robert.
“I had four children to raise and a farm to maintain,” recalls Penelope, a member of the Society of Women Artists (SWA) and an associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA). “All of a sudden I was milking a herd of cows at 4am each morning. But life had to go on.” Penelope, who now works with a neighbouring farmer, has been able to focus on her passion for painting “which is just as well because as a tenant farmer my lease expires in eight years”. Now, the artist, who lives in Shropshire, sells 120 paintings a year.

How has she achieved this? “Grabbing any opportunity including television appearances has led me to exhibit in galleries all over the UK, including having stands at Country Living shows - driving hundreds of miles in my car,” says Penelope, whose work is currently on show at The Mall Galleries, London as part of the SWA Summer Exhibition. Now finishing an exhibition at Deefine Arts in Heswall, The Wirrall she has just sold 16 paintings at Plas Glyn y Weddw in Wales. “I live on the border and although it always takes time for my work to sell in a new location. This gallery has been fantastic. My work is big and splashy and goes down well with their clients.” Penelope’s paintings will appear in the following exhibitions throughout 2014:
  • Hampton Court Flower Show July 8 to July 13
  • Summer Show, Betwys y Coed in Wales July 15
  • Blooming Marvellous in Stratford from July 17 to July 20
  • Tatton Park, July 23 to July 27
  • Summer exhibitions at The Albany, Cardiff, The Fountain Gallery, Llandeilo and Plas Glyn y Weddw in Wales
  • Burghley Horse Trials September 4 to September 7
