"We need to take our country back!" Who does he think has it?

I got stuck on a Detroit overpass yesterday, because of Joe Biden

So my family and I are driving through downtown Detroit yesterday, when suddenly we find out that all traffic is being stopped as it approaches an overpass traversing I-94. What's up? We're not sure but a Detroit cop is giving the signal that no one can pass.
After several minutes of just sitting there, he finally approaches our car and explains: "No one can go across just yet because Vice President Biden is about to come by on the freeway. Oh. Terrific. Because if there's anything Detroit needs, it's more of the muddled thinking that comes from the likes of Joe Biden. It turns out he was speaking at your run-of-the-mill Labor Day union rally, complete with the yammerings of every prominent Democrat who always shows up and says all the same nonsense about the "struggle of the worker" and so forth. And since we usually expect Biden to offer some sort of nonsense, I'll be happy to let you know that he didn't disappoint. Did you know that American workers are waking up and realizing that unions are awesome and that they need to belong to them? Neither did I, because it's not true, but that didn't stop Biden from making the claim anyway:

Actually, and quite contrary to Biden's assertion, Americans are "figuring out" nothing of the sort. Union membership is in a steep decline because American workers don't want to end up like those who got caught up in the collapse of the domestic auto industry. A friend of mine reports that at one point during Biden's speech, he started leading the union members in chanting, "We need to take our country back!" Um, yeah, I suppose the question this begs is fairly obvious, yes? Back from whom? If Obama, Biden and company aren't running the show, then they need to clear out of the White House and let someone who will actually take ownership of the results step in and do the job. But Biden just keeps blustering about how terrible things are for the romanticizied workers, as if he and his boss have had nothing to do with it:
There is a war on organized labor that must be reversed, Vice President Joe Biden told workers during a speech today at the annual Labor Day parade in Detroit. “Why in God’s name does someone who makes tens of millions managing a hedge fund pay only 15% in taxes, while the average GM worker who makes $55,000 a year pays 25% in taxes?” Biden asked the thousands of union members who converged on Detroit for the Labor Day festivities. “America has always done best when we act as one America. When we do, the nation succeeds.”
Here's a thought: If working-class people have been counting on Democrats and unions to protect their interests for generations, and things for working-class people are now so bad - as per Biden's declaration - maybe working-class people should stop putting their trust in Democrats and unions. What good does it do to say unions "built the middle class" (a dubious proposition if ever there was one, but let's leave that aside for the moment) if the so-called middle class is in such horrible shape. I don't know about you, but if my side is struggling every day, while the other side is living the high life, I'd want to find out how to do it their way instead of continuing to do it in the same way that's been getting me crappy results all these years. Democrats' proposition to the working-class is, "Trust us and we'll make everything OK for you." The real American work ethic is to learn how to do that for yourself. People who insist on clinging to the former proposition always stay where they are, which is why, every year, they're marching on Labor Day and declaring that they will "never give up the struggle." You can do what you want. I have no intention of struggling.
