Nancy Pelosi has a dire warning for the United States and, since she's not crazy at all, I want you all to listen very closely. On Friday night, she appeared on Bill Maher's HBO show where she hoped to deliver a slice of truth to the comedian's viewers. If the Republicans take the Senate this fall, things are going to be bad. Not just "they might cut taxes" bad, but really, really bad.

According to Pelosi, if the GOP does well in November, it could very well mean the end of "civilization as we know it." "It would be very important," Pelosi said, "for the Democrats to retain control of the Senate. Civilization as we know it today would be in jeopardy if Republicans win the Senate." Pelosi also pointed out that 50% of the American people have no idea that we even have a midterm election coming, before pronouncing those exact same people "very wise." Here's the world-ending announcement. Of course, it's possible that she uses a radically different definition of the word "wise" than the rest of us employ. Moments after claiming that Republicans might destroy civilization as we know it, she also said that Democrats don't use scare tactics. "We are not fear mongers," she said. "We're messengers of hope." Anyway, if Pelosi means that we're all going to spend the rest of our lives huddled around burning garbage cans, scrounging for ammunition, and fleeing a bunch of robotic assassins, you can relax. That's probably not going to happen. On the other hand, if Pelosi thinks "civilization as we know it" is a place where a lawless administration can do whatever it wants without facing any repercussions, she maybe on to something. There are at least a few Republicans who may just put that in Jeopardy.
