Uh oh: ObamaCare enrollment has now dropped to 7.3 million

Remember the high-fiving and victory laps that took place on the left when ObamaCare enrollment was announced to have not only passed the announced 7 million minimum needed to make the thing sustainable, but to have surpassed 8 million?
The White House was pretty psyched then, and conservatives were wondering if they'd been rope-a-doped. Having set 7 million as the line of demarcation, the White House watched as conservatives observed that the trend wasn't looking good for ObamaCare to get anywhere near it - only to see HHS ultimately announced that they had topped it with a million to spare. Granted, they counted people who hadn't paid premiums and filed the correct paperwork, but this was all about winning media narratives, and no way was the MSM going to quibble with the White House over trivia like that. You said we wouldn't make it! We made it! We win and you lose! That was in April. Today? Oops:

Enrollment in health plans offered through the Affordable Care Act dipped slightly through this year, falling from about 8 million this spring to 7.3 million in mid-August, the Obama administration announced Thursday. The tally represents the first update the administration has provided since the open enrollment period under the health law closed in April. . . . Because the law's long-term sustainability depends on millions more people signing up for health coverage in coming years, its supporters will have to reverse the erosion in coverage when the second sign-up period begins this fall. "The challenge in the coming year will be signing up more people for coverage, especially reaching those who stayed on the sidelines this year," said Larry Levitt, senior vice president at the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation, which has been closely tracking implementation of the law.
Remember, that number is likely to tumble further once HHS wades through the mess of people who a) still haven't paid their premiums; b) haven't filed the correct paperwork; and c) aren't even in the country legally. We could easily be looking at another plunge that takes us below the magic 7 million mark. Of course, they've got another open enrollment period starting in the fall, but how many people who didn't bite the first time around do you really think are going to sign up now? Of course, an awful lot of people might feel they have no choice because ObamaCare caused them to lose the plan they had and liked, and you know the rest of that tune. But let's also recognize: Long-term, in order to make this turkey fly, they're going to need a lot more than 7 million people, and a lot more of them are going to need to be young and healthy than they've got right now. Is that even possible? As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly . . .
