Excruciating. Embarrassing. Terrible.

Anti-coal Obama supporter Alison Lundergan Grimes won't say if she's ever voted for Obama

At one point, it actually looked like Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes might actually dethrone Mitch McConnell in Kentucky. Lately, despite her best efforts to position herself as some kind of anti-Obama Dem, that's looking less and less likely. Most polling now shows McConnell pulling away, after Grimes tripped herself up in a series of high profile gaffes.
First there was Grimes' infamous claim that she was a big supporter of the coal industry. This was debunked by her own staffers, who were caught on tape promising that, once elected, the candidate would do everything in her power to support Obama's anti-coal agenda. If her own staff is correct, Grimes is just playing "a lying game." She "has to say" she loves coal in order to sneak under the radar of Kentucky voters. This, of course, calls into question other areas where she supposedly disagrees with the President. If she's so willing to lie about coal, why should we assume she isn't equally willing to lie about her support for the 2nd Amendment? How can any voter be sure that - once she's in office -she won't go along with every single one of Obama's whims?

Knowing how Grimes will vote is especially tricky, since she won’t tell you how she's voted in the past. Recently, she was asked whether she voted for Barack Obama in 2008 or 2012 - and she refused to answer the question. Instead, she fell back on the "this election isn't about Barack Obama" rhetoric which, as we know, has already been decimated by the President himself. Here's her cringe worthy non-answer: Grimes may have been a Hillary delegate at one point, but she was an Obama delegate at the 2012 Democrat National Convention. Does she seriously expect anyone, anywhere, to think she didn't vote for the President? Does she honestly think we'll believe that her refusal to answer is out of some deeply-held "respect for the ballot box?" Does she not have the courage to stand up and admit that she supported her own party's President? Apparently she does not. We understand that the President is toxic. His poll numbers are disastrous, and he's a millstone around the neck of every Democrat participating in the 2014 midterms. It makes sense that candidates are desperately running away from his record. Still, this is just sad. How sad? Even Chuck "not a comedian" Todd thinks that her embarrassing display has disqualified her candidacy: Ouch. Look, we may not be the biggest Mitch McConnell fans, but the fact remains that his victory is important if the GOP wants to retake the Senate. Fortunately, it looks like Ms. Grimes is doing everything she can to make it happen.
