Election fallout

The first step on a long road

In the wake of a rancorous and wildly expensive mid-term election the only thing that is clear is that people are sick of the status quo. Congressional approval couldn't be much worse. But will things change? And what about 2016, which is breathing down our necks?

I am frightened by the inability of the Republican Party to listen to and include Conservatives in their processes and platforms. And I'm equally frightened by the Democrats rabid pursuit of certain issues. Not to mention the "pen and phone" threat by the President. With this election we may have set the groundwork for cooperative problem solving. Only time will tell. As citizens our job description has changed. We need to be proactive in letting our representatives know our wishes and concerns. We need to recognize smoke and mirrors and call them out. We need to educate each other on issues. And we need to listen to the other side and offer reasonable alternatives. And we must not be afraid to take a stand. This doesn't mean we should compromise our principles. But perhaps we aren't effective in articulating them. We have hard work ahead to create an atmosphere where we trust the government and are confident in our legislators. Voting records, town hall meetings, local offices are important. Governing should not be one way process. This is just the first step on a long road. Cristine White
