And there are a lot more waking up

Welcome, Abby, to the world of the savable

I had a great call the day after the election from a black woman named Abby. She told me she had always voted Democrat, but this time she decided to “give the Republicans a chance,” mainly because she had taken a hard look at the Democrats track record and tactics and had determined that they really hadn’t delivered anything positive for people like her.

Abby said she would rather have a job than some sort of public benefit, and for all their talk about how their policies would somehow strengthen regular folks, the Democrats’ record didn’t match their promises. She is going to give Republicans exactly what they should get, and no more than what they should get. She’s going to give them a chance. No one is suggesting Republicans deserve anyone’s unconditional devotion, certainly not after the many fumbled opportunities of the previous decade. It still makes me crazy sometimes when I think about what they could have done with the tax code, with health care, with energy policy, with entitlements, with spending . . . and before you blame George W. Bush for all of it, you should remember the GOP Congress was more skittish than he was about real change. But there’s a difference between a party that’s scared to do the right thing and a party that’s determined to do the wrong thing. What Abby clearly recognized from the past six years is that Democrats say one thing – that they’re out to help the middle class – while their actions prove they really want something entirely different. That’s to consolidate their own power by making as many people as possible dependent on government, and thus on them. What do people like Abby get out of that? Nothing. Putting your trust in a politician to give you what you need is a recipe for endless frustration and feeling of powerlessness. It is also a virtual guarantee of continued disappointment. When Republicans govern like real Republicans, they change up that proposition dramatically. They clear away the obstacles to your prosperity, and hand the power back to you to go and make it happen. What Abby has really decided here is that she would rather trust herself to pursue her goals, and what she’d like from government is to create an atmosphere that allows for prosperity rather than one that abuses its power by presuming to decide who gets what. There is no guarantee that the new Republican Congress will deliver, and we need to hold their feet to the fire just like we would the Democrats. When they don’t do what they’re supposed to do, it’s not going to be acceptable to Abby and it shouldn’t be acceptable to us either. But what Abby proved with this call is that we can indeed save the savable. Abby had voted Democrat in the past, but she wasn’t a Kool Aid drinker who was blind to reality. The Democrats have failed. Barack Obama has failed. It really doesn’t matter how you feel about Obama as a person or about the historic nature of his presidency. The facts make clear that he hasn’t delivered, and a person who decides based on fact cannot come to any other conclusion. Congratulations to Abby for being one of those people. Indeed, a lot of Abbys came to the forefront on Tuesday. We’re happy to have you!
